Your attitude needs to be checked at the door chief. Safety rules are here for a reason.
You won't be allowed to post events here on MiA if you cannot abide by the rules. That's not anyone being mean, that's the way it has been. MiA doesn't need to be associated with recklessness.
The shotgun with blanks is banned. The "flashbangs" which use small rifle primers is banned. And most fields ban use of hot burning smoke grenades. However, since there is no explosion in those, it is left up to the field owners discretion. The chance of a fire however, typically does not allow them to be used and thus, cold burning smokes are used.
The rules have been in place for a while and for good reason. Rocking the boat isn't going to get you anywhere.

Rocking the boat isn't going to get you anywhere. And believe me, Tex knows this from experience. Now, it's ok to try and come up with new ideas, but stubbornly trying to forge ahead is pointless. There's an old story that fits this pretty well, and it goes something like this: Long ago, the greatest warrior of a people was at one of the many cities of their realm. A great storm approached the city, so everyone took shelter behind the city walls. All that is, except for one man. The warrior asked him what he was doing. The man replied, "I am not afraid. I will not hide my face behind stone and mortar. I will stand before the wind and make it respect me." The warrior honored his choice and went within the city walls. The next day, the storm came and the man was killed, as the wind does not respect a fool. So there ya go. It's not that we're telling you to stop trying to come up with ideas, but if you bring something to the community and we tell you it's too dangerous, it's likely for a good reason. I'm not trying to burst your bubble or discourage you from inventing, but I am trying to keep you from getting so stuck on something you end up getting yourself banned.

Yes it's true, yes it's pyro, and yes it has been banned from events. Not all smoke is banned. Flashes normally aren't permitted. Anything that is hot-burning is banned for sure.

I agree that hot burning is not the way to go. That's why I suggested cold burning smokes as an alternative. White smoke means smoke screen, green smoke means chemical warfare. If you get caught in the green smoke without a gas mask, you're out. As far as the real shotgun thing, I think everyone's thought about that then just laughed it off as a bad idea. I want to know who in their right mind would allow that on their field before it was banned!? One last note. While the ballista style launcher would would work, and work well; I'd like to keep it looking as real as possible. If you start pulling out ballistas, catapults and trebuchets, then we're in a whole new game. There are already ways of firing projectiles from a mortar tube. Not that your idea is wrong, it would probably work very well. It's just not what I'm looking for.

I have nothing else to say...I think you guys are getting really carried away with this. Someone mentioned a few pages back (I think it was Tex) that anything that launches a projectile be it a NERF football, or a few hundred BB's, isn't going to work in most of the fields up in Michigan. There are too many trees and bushes that are going to impede the football/BB shower from being used for what you want. Like I was saying earlier, it is a very cool idea, and I would like to see it happen, but until a forest fire burns down a field or you find a new open spot to play in, nothing is really going to come of this. But, that's just my opinion, I hope I can be proven wrong.

Rocking the boat isn't going to get you anywhere. Please read the post before pointing fingers at me. I am trying to figure out what is, and what is not acceptable because there are a lot of contradictions in policy and I would like clarification, nothing more. As a point of fact, there isor was a disclaimer posted ( I think Kneif or someone from Hellfish posted it)on event announcements for hosts that are not going to be fully in compliance with Semia and MIA rules. I saw it posted on one of those two websites and I think I even saved a copy of it on my desk top because it was well written and looked useful for what we are planning. No one is trying to make waves here, just trying to expand on what we have to make this a better, more complete experience. Who the hell ever said anyone wanted to use a shotgun with blanks anyway? I have nothing else to say, now you're just being silly! That just sounds like an invitation to the emergency room! >.< I know what schrapnel and spalling feels like (ouch) Can someone with useful information tell me which kind of smoke/pyro is used? How about it Tex, brand and or model information would be most helpful, can you give me that information instead of ranting, I looked at your posting about 'Newbie FAQ' and couldn't find anything on it, but you seem to have information so I am asking.

Any kind of smoke that is known as 'cold-burning' is usually acceptable. This means that they have a pull ring and all ignition is contained within the device. Smokes that you have to light a fuse for, or 'hot-burning' as they are known are generally not allowed for danger of starting a fire, as they have an open and uncontained flame. Here is an example: www.combatdepot.com/index.php?cPath=21_45&osCsid=a9a6b75b14cc0cbb2aaf282aab189a7eAnd while Tex may tend to come at things with a sledgehammer instead of a feather duster, you do need to take a chill pill. People around here usually don't take the time to help people who start copping attitude, whatever the reason. Consider this one a gesture of good faith. You may not get another one. Now, the both of you, lets do try and keep this civil AND on-topic. So far, this has been mostly a rather interesting discussion about a possible innovation.

Cold burning smokes. That means they have no flame. Typically are activated with a pull pin. You can find several different quality and priced ones just by googling. I don't use any unless people want me to throw them for them, I don't find them to be cost effective. So I don't have a specific source for them.
If it uses a flame, or explodes, just steer clear. Some hosts allow hot burning smokes, but it's not terribly common, so it's not really worth it to spend the $. And nobody allows explosives that I know of, they would be silly to.

Now, the both of you, lets do try and keep this civil AND on-topic. I'm sorry if i came off as rude to all of you. I mean no disrespect. Please understand, I don't take it too kindly when someone tells me an idea is stupid and impossible because no one else has yet to find a way. I do want your opinions, but I would like them to be helpful. I know some ideas are down-right dangerous, but I'm looking for concept first. Once we can get more workign concepts, we can then find a way to make it safer and more effective. I don't plan on using any of the ideas discussed here for a long time after many tests and experiments. But then, the final product may be something completely different than what we're discussing here.

Well, if thats the rules, we will just use it on our field with a disclaimer posted. People cry already when guys bring out miniguns and similar heavy weapons that give a vast advantage. Rules change with circumstances or we find ourselves obsolete. I remember when people first started using cattle markers for fun... then BOOM! painball was born. I think that if such systems as we are producing are play tested, people will agree that they are not anymore dangerous than high powered AEGs. Until then, we will just keep them on our field and shoot footballs into low orbit ;D Maybe we could use a waterballoon launcher in a tube with a trigger release. We could just use a manual winch to crank back a really powerful rubberband powered device similar to cocking an old fashioned crossbow. Oh, by the way, on the thought of pyrotechnic devices, it came to my attention, that someone (who wont be named) uses a modified shotgun (real steel) loaded with shells containing only a primer and BBs. First, I have to say that I have not seen this, but have been told about it by several people, so I am going to ask if it is true. Second, I have to say that if it is, doesn't that qualify as pyrotechnics? Besides that rumor, what about the smoke grenades and flashes used on several fields? ???they all count as pyrotechnics due to the propellant/fuel burned. I really like were this is going. The only way new things come out is if somebody tests them. If things are not aloud at mia events then test them on your home field. I have seen a tater canon that shot beans used and it worked amazing yet is not aloud in big events.

I'd like to get back on topic. Can anyone contribute on how to make an airsoft mortar?
