Hi,
I'm planning on getting into airsoft and I am looking at guns at the moment. I'm not really familiar with any brand names, so I was wondering if this gun is any good:
www.airsplat.com/Items/ER-JP-FAMAS-950.htm
It looks kind of cheap for an AEG, so If anyone has any advice concerning brand names and this gun in particular, it would be most welcome.IGNORE THE ABOVE! I have since decided not to get this rifle, and I am taking recommendations of other airsoft rifles. I'm on a precisely $200 budget for an airsoft rifle (Not including swag such as mags 'n gear (I'm such a gangsta)). You can find what my preferences are a few posts down. Any and all advice is welcome, just not trolling or 1337n355 when posting. Thanks for your time! ;D

Too many misnomers in that product description. The included "review" also states a lot of information that would send me away instantly. Low-Price High-FPS AEG's will break fast and often. If you want something to break into the sport with and not have to constantly dump money in repairs, look into: www.airsoftsmith.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=21_22_124&products_id=3681You will not be disappointed and this comes highly recommended in our community. I understand it's not a FAMAS but with the amount of repair parts and accessories available to the M4 platform, if something breaks you can't really go wrong. Don't forget to read the stickies at the top of each section as they contain tons of useful information for those starting their Airsoft addiction!

Thanks a lot for the info, I had a feeling that gun was kind of seedy. I'm not really picky about what gun model I get, so long as it isn't an AK. Although, I would prefer a flat-top M4 or M16 so that I could mount optic on it in the future, I find that those variants of the rifle tend to be pricey.

Most charging handles/rear/front sights are removable, thankfully!

How could I have been so stupid as to not think of that! Oh well, thanks for the info!

I can't say much for the FAMAS, but the Combat Machine M4 seems to be a great rifle. I just purchased one and have been very pleased with it. Seems to be a very solid rifle with a lot of after market parts available. I purchased the M4 Raider package from Airsoftmegastore.com at a very resonable price. It was a little above my budget but I believe the little extra cost will be worth it in the long run.

Enough about the Combat Machine for just one second; If you are stoked on a FAMAS (which would be awesome to see one on a field, rather than an M4), you should consider the TM famas. TMs shoot sub 300 and have the best air-seal on any AEG and are known for having superb stock performance reliability, and especially accuracy. Same is said for the G&G Combat Machine, but TMs still are generally superior. The JG Famas I would not recommend, just because of the lack of positive feedback. In the end, get what you want. Its ultimately your decision. Also, I've noticed that every beginner's thread about their first airsoft purchase turns into a thread praising the Combat Machine, so keep in mind that they are just too good for the money.

You need to decide what style of gun you want, and go from there. If you buy something for practicality, and it turns out you just don't like the feel, you probably won't be happy in the long run. If you pick a particular style then we can probably be more helpful with recommendations.

If you pick a particular style then we can probably be more helpful with recommendations. I really like bullpup designs (Excluding the L85, it's an ugly wedge of metal. I hate 'em), but those tend to not have any sort of iron sights attached. That's why I haven't already just gone on and bought an AUG A4. The TAR-21 is my favorite, but who wants to pay $375-$600 for an airsoft gun? I mean, really. As for the more conventional rifles, the M4 is kind of common, and overrated. M16A4 with a flattop is my second pick, but they only seem to come in the $300+ price range. The SCAR is my all time top pick for non-bullpup, but they are out of budget most of the time, or are given terrible reviews. P.S. Does anyone have anything to say about the Foreign Legion FAMAS? I just found it while searching for a TM FAMAS.

My guess is, the Foreign Legion FAMAS is as bad as the JG. Worse yet, it may just be a Y&P. I wouldn't bother with it.
The TM is a solid gun, but there's one huge problem. It's the only gun available with a V1 gearbox, and it's not a very popular model in general. So there are almost no upgrade or replacement parts available for it. So if something breaks, you're up shit's creek without a paddle. And if you want to upgrade it (normal AEG springs fit, but almost nothing else), you're just putting yourself more at risk. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend the FAMAS as a first gun. If it breaks on you, you're essentially out of the sport. If an M4 of some variety breaks on you, you can get replacement parts to your door in two days from any retailer in the country.

Would you know of any good flat-top M16s or M4s in the $200 price range? I've only found them in the $300+ price range thus far. I would prefer the M16 mainly because of it's solid state butt-stock.

Dang, that's going to take a while. Is there a way to convert a carry handle M16 to a flat top M16? I'd kill to have one right about now.

Not without replacing the entire upper wich would cost more than the difference you would be paying anyways.

Not without replacing the entire upper wich would cost more than the difference you would be paying anyways. Grrr, I was hoping it would be simpler than that. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to look elsewhere. Oh yes, what do people have to say about this?: www.airsoftpost.com/product_info.php?products_id=29826I'm a big AUG fan, which might bias my opinions when it finally comes to picking the gun I want. The main problem, though, is that it doesn't have iron sights, which will put a dent in my gear budget.
