Money issue: Airsoft costs less than drugs and has better long term effects.
Gun issue: They're your parents. You can try to educate them on how you're going to learn/practice treating them as real weapons, but in the end, their decision goes and you should abide by it. Till you're 18, anyways.

It seems passe, but the 'I could be doing drugs/getting drunk instead of Activity X' method of convincing parents seems to strike a chord with them. Also, ask them this; How many kids just sit on the computer on the weekend? At least airsoft gets you outside and is good exercise.

By the time I bought my first AEG I had already desensitised my parents to guns. Before airsoft I had a normal BB gun, then I went into paintball, and now airsoft.
Though by that time I was already 18 and it didn't quite matter much anymore; I can pretty much do what I want now. My Dad still tries to throw up the excuse "It's my house and I won't have any guns under my roof!" and the classic "don't throw your money away on that crap."
Hehe, as far as he knows, I on ly only have one AEG.
My Mom encourages me, she wants a GBB to carry in her purse!

I'm just saying airsoft should NEVER be used even to scare people in a manner that could be considered self defense. If you want to carry a gun do so, get a CCW and do it. If you point an airsoft gun at someone as a self defense tactic you are making the threat of deadly force, if you cannot follow that up you will likely be killed. Just a fact of the way things work.

P.S. Also consider the sheer amount of bad publicity, not to mention without a CCW likely with Michigan law it would still be considered carrying a concealed weapon even though it is airsoft. Just some food for thought.
