Do you need to have an RIS to put sweet stuff on an M4 like light and stuff?

The ris makes it mount easy, but you can get mounts that mount a light & laser to the barrel. Or do like most, use Military Engineering Tape. (duct tape or electrical tape).

Yes, all RIS means is Rail Interface System. You can remove the handle.

Opt for the tape...that way if your in a fire fight and need to take it off, just pull and rip it off!!! hehheh duct tape...repairs all, fast easy and cheap! -CP

Uh, CamoPhreak you do know about QD mounts, right? Why would I put sticky, nasty, dirt-attracting tape on my gun that I would have to either a) wrestle with or b) cut to get my accessory off when with just the touch of a button or the twist of a switch, that same accessory will come off quickly and easily? A mount that will always be consistent, and that I can put back on at any time, I might add.
There's nothing mystical about a RIS unit. It's just an easy, convenient way to hang accessories off your gun. Is it the only way? Not by any means. But it's popular for the simple reason that it works really well.

a big ris system is absolutely useless to me, i just feel i have to fill it, because if i don't, i wasted my money id suggest just getting a smal ris patch you can find at www.airsoft128.com for $20 that mounts on the reg m4 grips and comes with an RIS foreward grip you have to pay $10 for a mount but im sure if your poor you can find some other way to mount it search for "NCS-MARSH" in the search box
