A lot of people that I have met have asked my how I got my AEG to sound the way it does. Often, when I say "shimming," they have no idea what I'm talking about. While shimming may be a bit of a more advanced part of AEG maintenance, it is essential for a truly well-functioning gun. The idea behind it is also fairly straightforward: Maximize tooth contact of the gear teeth to ensure a more efficient transfer of energy. A video on shimming has been requested by my viewers on YouTube and people who have met me at events. While my video was originally intended to simply show how I shimmed my gun and why I did certain things, it turned into a guide as soon as I started making it. I may add a full written guide here at a later time, but I think that videos really help explain things better. The video starts of with the basics of what is shimming, and then evolves into a full-blown guide on proper Bevel-to-Pinion shimming. While the video presents a Version Two gearbox design, the concept is the same on all versions. If you have comments about the video, please let me know either on the video page or here.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support. If you have recommendations for other tech videos, I'd like to hear them. I plan on going over basic functionality of the parts, what things are, and some other tutorials on mods like AoE and installation of MOSFETs.

Solid video, this deserves more views. I've shimmed hundreds of gearboxes over the years but it has been a while since I have opened my own. I watched your video for a little brush up on my shimming knowledge and was glad to see that what I knew still holds true. You explained everything very well - something many how-to airsoft videos fail at. My only suggestion for you would be to explain more in detail how to properly grease the gearbox, I know a lot of people mess this up with too much grease or far too little.

I plan on doing a large amount of various tech videos during the winter, because airsoft play lessens during that time. That will be one of them.

Since this thread is alive again, I'm going to request a video on short stroking and avoiding pre-engagement. I'm still not too sure about when you have to worry about that, and stuff concerning the spring rating when short stroking. I know there's already videos on that out in the interwebz, but it wouldn't be a bad topic to cover down the road. Good work so far (like Tex said, many airsoft tech videos do a horrible job of explaining things).

Once I start making the videos, I will dedicate a thread to them in the tech section here.
