Hey all, I just want to let everyone in on what was shown at OP: Blackjack down at Sherwood Forest in LaPorte, Indiana this weekend.
An undisclosed paintball manufacturer, probably Tippman, showed us two prototypes at the event. They had a high-end and a low-end with the prices being $400 and $200 respectively. They were both the exact same internally and were based off of a standard length M4.
The difference was the high-end model had changeable furniture such as the hand guards and stock and full-metal construction. The low-end model had no such interchangeability and will be primarily constructed with polymer. Both models will be able to use either an 850 Psi output HPA tank and air rig or 12-gram CO2 cartridges. Please note that use of 12-grams will require the purchase of proprietary magazines that are said to cost $20 a piece upon release and will only be able to fire 30-50 rounds depending on temperature and the fps you're running.
The pro's:
The price point- At this price they will undercut P* and DG
Ease of adjustment- ROF and FPS are adjustable. Upon asking I was told 5-20 RPS and 250-450 FPS respectively
Realism- These systems ARE GBB. They DO use a sear. With the CO2 option a remote line is not required
Aesthetic- They appeared to be very well constructed for them being prototypes and do feature a pic rail for addition of aftermarket optics
Air efficiency- Said to get 3500 shots out of a 68/4500 tank.
Tournament lock- It has one to prevent on-field adjustment of settings.
Customer service- The company felt that this was something largely missing in the airsoft community and plan to offer a large amount of support.
The con's:
Furniture- As of right now all that you can change on the high-end model is the hand guard and stock. Pistol grips must be modified to work.
Reliability- As of right now I couldn't get a straight answer as to what kind of endurance tests were performed. While you could say that I shouldn't list this as a con, I sure can't list it as a pro at the moment.
Proprietary design- This is a completely new system. Standard TBB's and hop-units are not compatible. Internals are nothing at all like anything I've seen. Standard mags will work in this system ONLY if you use HPA. With this in mind I told them that for this system to flourish they will need to provide aftermarket support.
I will provide information as it becomes available. The players that were present at the op, who filled out the survey, are on the developmental mailing list and some will be offered to do field testing of this design. Please feel free to ask me any questions.
