So awhile ago I decided it was time for a new AEG. I had enough money for whatever I wanted and thought I would do something a little different. I wanted to be able to go to any OLCMSS game and say that I had what was, hands down, the best gun there for my purposes. At first I thought polar star would be the way to go, and I'm sure many of you will argue that it is. However, I personally run a JPC and a very very light and fast build, and the tank and air lines would defeat that idea altogether. Many of my friends run PTW's and I didn't like the idea of worrying about getting the FCU wet, I didn't like the sound theirs made compared to a normal AEG, and honestly the rate of fire you get in a stock PTW is not high enough for my tastes. Anyways, I chose to build a standard version 2 gearbox with what I believe are the best parts money can buy, I'll toss a list of specifics down below.
After getting all the parts in and building it in just a few hours my buddy took three hours shimming it in some zero tolerance shim job he learned to do. Evidently you shim it too tightly, then take shims off in the smallest possible increments until it spins just perfect. (I could be completely wrong about that but that was what it looked like he did to me.) I expected to have a gearbox that would last 30-50k before something quit at the 40rps & 375fps it was shooting. Well... 50k rounds later (my only gun and I just finished going through 10 bottles of Elite force bb's I bought) my trigger contacts finally gave out. 11.1v 25c lipo's tend to be hard on trigger contacts. I took the entire gearbox apart and oh my gosh, the biggest surprise of my life.... Every single part in the gearbox looked brand new. I wiped the grease off the piston and you couldn't even tell where the gears were tracking on it. The bevel gear had one, and I mean one, tooth that showed the shiny metal that is the telltale sign of wear. I believe that probably happened on installation. The pinion on my lonex a1 red motor had some small tracks in it from the bevel, but nothing I would consider detrimental to its function or lifespan.
For those of you that have played with me, which as I live in Illinois would be only those of you who were at lightning strike and any of the past few IRENE's, know that I am not easy on the trigger. I love to just dump mags because the sound of the rope my gun shoots hitting people brings great joy to my life We have chrono'ed my gun in both fps and rps with several different chrono's and my lowest fps has been 370, while my highest was 381. Usually I get 375-378 very consistently. Rps wise between 38 and 41 depending on how my batteries are feeling that day.
I want this and the pictures I will be putting up here in the next few days as we wait for my mosfet, trigger, and new wiring harness to arrive to be testament to how incredibly durable a well built AEG can be. Everyone these days seems to have a thing for the performance of a polar star or PTW, when I honestly believe that anything above my rate of fire and fps is useless unless your running 15 highcaps or a box mag. I realize I cannot adjust my fps, however, I don't need to. 375fps is plenty for outdoors, and legal for any indoors place I have played at here in illinois. Reliability is relative to the quality of the parts and the quality of the work you put into your gun. This gearbox has not been cleaned, lubed, or so much as blown out since it was put together, and it is still in "like new" condition.
VFC mk18 mod 0
Stock vfc shell w/ 8mm bearings (I have yet to crack a gearbox shell so... no point in buying a new one IMO)
Shs cylinder head
ZCI full cylinder
Lonex 16:1 gears
Lonex Titan a1 red motor
Double o-ring nozzle
Lonex POM piston head
SHS blue piston (swiss cheesed) clandestineairsoft.com/pistons-c-1_6_8/shs-nylon-piston-with-15-teeth-shs-blue-15-tooth-p-56.html
Scatterplot Sorbo i do not remember which one
HC bearing spring guide
HC m100 spring clandestineairsoft.com/springs-c-1_6_7/hc-m100-aeg-spring-p-363.html
Custom Non-Ab mosfet and new silver plated wiring harness
Keep in mind these are just a list of internals. Externally the only things stock are the metal body, crane stock, outer barrel assembly, and buffer tube. There have been several mods that you can't just go out and buy, first of those being correct AOE on the piston, and the other being the incredible shim job that was put in the gun for me.
Finally, to those of you who hate on AEG's.... well... this is after 50,000 rounds and thats about ten events worth of bb's for me if not more so... HAHAHAHA!!! I win
