For those of you guys looking to pick up M16A2s for EW, I just discovered that G&D, the company that makes the new PTW/CTW knock-off for like $300, will be releasing an M16A2 variant.
Still waiting on a few more reviews, but could be a nice choice.

I'm highly interested in this. Do you have any literature on this that is valid and correct?
EDIT: I will put this in here since it pertains specifically for this event and I don't care for anyone's opinion that is not affiliated with this event or has been a veteran of this event: What do you guys feel on the M16A1 or M16A2 that WE offers for a GBBR for *this event specifically (not speaking of any other airsoft game)*? I know that the newer ones are more tolerant for cold weather, but I'm just curious since they really do help with the "reenacting" factor. I would just like to be able to use an actual M16 cleaning kit while in camp to break it down more realistically to get that feeling of stepping back in time.

Phantom,
Check out the review of the G&D DTW on Arnie's. There's a link to the review in our general discussion section.
I've thought a lot about what I want to do as far as an M16A2 goes.
At first, I was leaning towards building an M16A4 front-end for my P*, running the carry handle and adding a full stock. Having to carry my HPA tank in addition to the loads of other gear required for EW was off-putting and ALICE gear doesn't work very well as far as carrying my tank and air-rig.
I then thought about a GBBR, maybe a G&P WOC, KWA or KJW and came to the conclusion that they probably wouldn't cut it in the cold, Eastwind environment.
There's a big discussion on the Eastwind forum right now about GBBR rifles with people weighing with different perspectives.
I think for simplicity, skirmishability and cost effectiveness, that I would pick up a G&G M16A2; either the sub $150 plastica model or the sub $250 full-metal model.

I understand what you mean. I was weighing in being a Support Gunner or going as a Rifleman because of the long patrols. Carrying that M249 for a mile or more would start to suck even with a sling. I was looking into a G&G Sportline because I only want the A2 for this event specifically. The AEG also seems like it would be the best bet for the climate during East Wind. If I did get the A2, I was looking into getting STAR real cap mags that come with about 10 of them.

What's this Gimpa? You need an M16 now? And an AKS-74? The Canadian Contingent has been holding their discussion on GBB C7A1's (equivalent to M16A3) over here. The consensus seems to be that the rifles do work well in any condition that an AEG would work - and the reduced round count forces players to think about things in a more milsim way. The Canadians are mostly using WE M16A3s modded out with ra-tech and real steel parts. (At EW5 they borrowed M16s from the armory). Just keep 'em properly oiled. Can't wait until I get my GHK AKM and drop some East German furniture on it...

What's this Gimpa? You need an M16 now? And an AKS-74? I like to be prepared for any contingency. In all seriousness, though, I recently sold off all my other rifles and only have my P*, so I've got a hankering for something new. I don't see myself using an M16A2 on a regular basis, since I've already got a better AR in my P*, but I wouldn't mind rocking an AK from time to time. The issue I've got with going Warsaw Pact is the lack of a lot of comfort gear and the overall general expense. With NATO, there's a lot of nice Goretex gear, warm sleep system, nice helmet suspensions, etc. This is the sort of stuff that makes a difference when it's 35 degrees outside and drizzeling. In addition, I already have a lot of the more expensive NATO items, and NATO items are very easy to find at any decent surplus store. A lot the NATO gear I already use for camping (particularly the Goretex, poncho liner and bivy sack), so it has some practical applications outside of just doing an impression. To add to this, the NATO uniforms are so much cheaper ($15 for a BDU jacket? easy.) than the Warsaw Pact uniforms. That said, I'm still tempted by the Warsaw Pact side of the event...

Everyone's a rifleman first, and on most patrols that's what you'll want to bring along. Machine guns only really come out during major assaults or setting hardpoints - and, of course, on vehicles. East German uniforms are cheaper than US; we definitely need to figure out an alternative pathway for the Soviets though, as the Afghanka uniforms are not cheap in the slightest and that is definitely hurting their ability to bring in new players. (The rest of the gear really isn't too bad).

Then my mind is set! WE M16A3 it is. You see, we are actually quite lucky. Because this is in March, we have ALL winter to decide if we want the GBBR or AEG. If you notice that the GBBR isn't performing up to your standards during the cold months, then you know what it will be like at least in March in the elements--24/7. And all of that money that you spent on the GBBR can be sold to get you a nice TM (or even a G&G Sportline!) and then purchase metal exterior parts with a sh'load of mags.

Phantom (or anyone else going to a GBBR for EW),
Let me know how it goes with the WE M16. I'd love a GBBR because I dread going back to an AEG, but I'm wary of how fragile a lot of these guns are out of the box. If I'm buying a gun I want to skirmish it, not buy new parts for it every day of the week.

I have been wanting to go gas for a while now. This gives me an excuse to push myself out of the AEG area. I don't want PolarStar only because I don't like the external air rig, haha. That is just my personal opinion.
On topic though, I will let you know how it goes, Gimp. I am selling a lot of stuff soon for funds for this event (stuff that I do not need anyway). Keep an eye out for anything that you may want. ;D

I need status updates from all attendees of the training event by this Sunday.
Update to include; - are you coming? - bringing anyone along? - any special dietary concerns? - anything you need from Allegheny (I need this by Friday) - what equipment you are bringing - to ensure that we have the basic requirements to even survive out there. Judging by recent temperatures, it's going to be very bitterly cold out there overnight. Perfect for our training purposes - but I certainly wish it wasn't as bad for our first time out.
