Germany's impressed me again... and so has your purchase, hahaha. Nice buy. Armeeverkauf.de has 'em for 9,50 Euro, that's like $15? And I have to buy some other stuff from them. That's the best price I've seen, but I haven't really looked too hard. The other gear - your sporting goods store list, take a look at overseas shops like www.varusteleka.com/, www.armeeverkauf.de/, ebay.de, etc... you save money in the long run getting the correct kit now Looks good though. Locationally... We couldn't be much more spread out. I originally had thought of Gladwin State Forest Area as a reasonable site, it still may be depending on willingness of us southeastern folk to drive a few hours. I'm down for sure, I feel a good drive really makes the transition between normal life and something else - but others may not feel the same. It's also not terribly far for Gimpalong, about 2 and a half hours.

The distance won't bother me. If it was only for the day, I'd probably care more. Overnight, however, makes the gas money not seem so bad.
As for the shelter halves, I'll see if I can muster any more cash up and browse that site you recommended. I'm not planning on making the trip out to Eastwind until 2015, so I've got plenty of time to get the correct equipment for the kit. I'm certainly trying to minimize buying extra equipment that I'll end up replacing later on though.
Edit: I almost forgot, I mentioned this fieldcraft event to a friend of mine who plays a lot of airsoft. He says he is going to set aside time for this, since he's pretty big into survivalist events/scenarios. He's actually currently on his way back from having just hiked the entire Appalachian trail for the last 6 months, so I'm sure he has most, if not all of the equipment to spend a weekend in the elements of December.

Sounds excellent buddy. I added a 'roster' for the training event onto the OP. We'll ensure that the date is good, and likely have it confirmed by the middle of next week.

By the way, I have a Gortex Parka and field hat in Flectarn if you guys need to purchase some. I don't use them. I'm willing to make a drive to anywhere in Michigan for this training event. I have been so excited that I have already packed up all of my ALICE gear that I have currently.

My attendance at this training event is really dependent on my schedule (err... the wife's schedule). I've got some bits and pieces of the required kit, but haven't yet picked up the shelter havles or a suitable bag for winter camping (my three season bag isn't going to cut it in December).

Dec 1-2, 2012: East Wind Fieldcraft event at Roscommon State Forest Area This event will be targeted towards milsim airsofters looking to engage in a more Eastwind style of play. The event is designed to develop basic field sustenance skills, patrolling techniques, and land navigation abilities.
What: A weekend of fieldcraft challenges and patrolling to help units better prepare themselves for the East Wind battlefield. Attendees will be broken up into small patrols and will be given a series of non-direct action combat related missions. Individual attendees are encouraged to PM me with specific personal goals that they would like to work on so that we can arrange the event to provide the maximum benefits to all who attend.
When: Saturday December 1 starting at 09:00, ending on Sunday December 2nd at around 13:00.
Where: Roscommon State Forest Area. Rendezvous point TBD.
How much $? Cost for this event is $25 and includes meals.
What do attendees need to bring? This course is taught “on the march” so attendees will need to have the following:
Rucksack or Veshmeshok Sleeping gear Sleeping pad Shelter half, plasch or bivy bag Rain gear (dependent on forecast) Properly fitted boots Properly fitted uniform compass Red filtered flashlight Mess kit and silverware Capacity to carry a minimum of 2 liters of water on your person Boo boo kit (Bandaids, ibuprofen, antacids, allergy meds, whatever) Spare pair of socks Clothing appropriate to the weather Pen and paper (suggest waterproof pad and a pencil) High-vis (blaze orange) cap or vest
EVERYTHING you will be using for the weekend must be packed in your rucksack or worn on your person. Civilian alternatives to required items are permitted - but they must be reliable in the field.
What should attendees expect? This event will be run in the field so you’ll be starting off at the staging area and pushing out immediately from there. Patrols will have mission sets that will allow each individual in the patrol as well as the patrol as a whole to maximize learning during the course of the weekend.
Who should attend? This course is open to anyone of reasonable fitness who is interested in improving their fieldcraft regardless of if they ever intend to attend East Wind.
How do I sign up? Reply in this thread. Come back and post again if you have to back out.
Roster Impulse Columbus Columbus's buddy (possible) Phantom G3 Thadius (possible) Hunter (possible) Ogre Gimpalong (possible)
Notes specific to MiA This isn't really an airsoft event, which is why I didn't break off and make a separate event thread for it. If you'd rather I take that approach and stop bumping the Eastwind thread, feel free to shove this post off to the Event Planning board.

Wow I wish I hadn't written off East Wind, otherwise I'd have got gear together just for this little practice event. Having a mil-sim training/camping event in a themed loadout sounds like a ton of fun. I would ask if I could come without gear, but sadly I'm busy that weekend.
Also if anyone is looking for a really nice (like brand new) SSH40 helmet, the army navy surplus in Frederic has 2 of them for $25 each. I think their either post-war Polish make or they've been relined with new leather for some other country. Obviously call them ahead of time if you need more details since I'm no expert in anything east-bloc.

How many meals are included? I had not expected there to be a fee.
Edit: I just dropped another $120 for an overseas order for the load bearing system, shelter half, and rucksack, so I'd like to minimize additional costs. If I can bring my own meals to avoid paying a fee, that's the route I would like to take if possible.
Further edit: What kind of meals are they? Specifically, do they include milk in them? If they do, people will be easily tracking a brown trail due to my lactose intolerance. Another reason why I'd like to bring my own meals, more food has milk in it than you would think.

Impulse,
Have you looked into letting the local authorities know about this event? Things could go south pretty quick if a few hikers spot a group of guys wearing camouflage and body armor running around in the woods. It might be worth contacting the local county sheriff and any of the local police jurisdictions.

Firstly, if there's interest to have these more often / next year, we can certainly do that.
@columbus, the meals would be squad rations - probably taken from the East Bloc cookbook - rice, vegetables, beef stew kinda stuff. Trail food. Possibly subs for lunch on day one - but compact, nutritious field meals. It's almost certainly going to cost less than $25, that number's used for other events but also includes upkeep on sensitive equipment that we don't have. I'm not going to rob you guys, the meals will be provided at cost. Let me know what dietary concerns there are, we can certainly work around them.
@gimpa, it's in the midst of hunting season (although that particular weekend falls between rifle and late archery), people roaming the area in cammies is more the norm than the exception - and the highvis cap requirement exists for a reason. (Body armor is not required, or encouraged). Regardless, I can send an email to the local sheriff. Good thinkin'. (The townships we'd be operating in don't have their own police forces)

Excellent. As long as buttermilk pancakes and other delicious foods are not served, I'm in. I'll have to check with my friend, so for now I would recommend marking him down as a maybe. As long as my order arrives in time (and it probably will), I'm definitely not backing out on this.

It's gotta be stuff that can be heated up in canteen cups and mess kits, pretty much, because bringing a big 'ol cast iron skillet along on a several kilometer hike isn't much fun

Oh right, how did I forget that entrenching tools double as skillets? Rookie mistake on my part. Alright, that opens a few options up.
