Is it possible to have a gun like an Echo 1 M4 and make it perform better by putting in a whole new gearbox and motor? Wouldn't this help and make it shoot completely different?

Yes, it would. But by that time, you mind as well just have bought a new gun. Really there is nothing wrong with a clone gun if you want to upgrade it as you go. However stock, clone guns tend to have a lower standard of quality control; which in turn may cause lesser performance. If you are planning on dropping in a whole new gearbox. I would say stick with what you have and just upgrade the internals themselves. Perhaps reinforced gears, a better piston and head, and new hop up and tightbore would be good places to start. All of these things will help with the performance of your gun without having to drop in a new gearbox.

I agree with JuiceBox, you would be better off buying a whole new gun. If you think about it all an AEG is, is a gearbox, motor, hop-up and barrel assembly, and externals.

Really I am looking for the highest performance possible. So keep my gun which I have already put money into or sell it and get like a G&G that I would want to still upgrade to once I get it? The gun I have now has a tight bore, Metal RIS, and Metal Body.

The metal body on your gun has nothing to do with internal performance. If you have money into your Echo 1, just spend a little more money into upgrading your gear box. You say you already have a tighbore, I would suggest a set of reinforced gears, a new piston and piston head, and if you don't already have one a 9.6v battery over a 8.4v battery. This of course is just my opinion. Oh and almost forgot, a decent shim job and get rid of all that nasty gear grease that came in the gearbox from the factory. Then re-grease your gearbox with white lithium grease that you can get at any hardware store.

Would your suggestion help the gun shoot farther, because really this is the main problem.

For range and accuracy, the main part for it is a tightbore (which you already have) and a good bucking and nub.

You can also increase accuracy by not only getting a better hop-up assembly but also by using heavier BBs. The major mistake a lot of new players make is thinking that FPS = Range. That's not true. Also, lighter BBs may go faster, but because they have less inertia, they actually slow down a whole lot faster as well. Heavier BBs on the other hand may come out of the barrel with less initial velocity but they maintain that velocity because of the laws of inertia and wind resistance etc.... hence longer range and accuracy. Invest in some good .25g BBs and a nice hop-up. There are some great articles around on how to adjust your hop-up perfectly for maximum range.

Personally, I wouldn't start replacing the gears/piston unless the old ones wear out. Unless you're drastically increasing your FPS or something, the stock ones should hold up for a while.
