I'm used to a CQB environment, and in that case, I use a lot of head protection. Helmet, shemagh, goggles of course, and a padded wrap around for over my mouth, so I don't lose any teeth. Outdoors, I don't see it as entirely needed, but useful. Sure your neck gets tired quicker, but it does offer protection in places you don't think about. Ever been shot in the cartilidge of your ear? I'd rather have a sore neck...

Honestly while a helmet adds to any loadout you are trying to achieve, I am not a fan at all. My suggestion would be to ask a friend or someone at a game if you can borrow their's for a round to see if you like it. A simple baseball cap works great and you can still look BA as seen below: I'm with Melson. I usually wear a baseball cap with a velcro patch on the front. The patch takes most of the pings that would hurt your dome and the rest of the fabric on the hat absorbs enough impact that it doesn't leave a mark on your head (that, and hair helps too). Helmets are bulky, hot, and make your head feel the size of a melon. Have you ever tried running with a bicycle helmet that was too big for you? That's what it feels like. Also, those really cheap $8-$20 helmets are disproportionate to the real thing. If you're going to make some sort of awesome helmet, at least drop $60 or $80 on one of the really nice replicas that are very close to the real thing. That or pick up an MSA MICH on ebay for $180. I'd rather get this for $180: FLYYE Force Recon Vest (CIRAS)And a $30-$70 helmet from www.weaponblender.com. Look in the Combat gear section.

Helmets are a great idea if you are creating a specific loadout, or are playing in an area with pipes, low doorways or other obstructions that might injure you.
For the most part, however, helmets just make your head a bigger target and even "telegraph" your movements. Maintaining a small profile that is difficult to hit is pretty critical in airsoft where engagement ranges are usually less than 100 feet and a helmet definitely increases your profile to a certain degree. A lot of lower profile helmets are available, but as mentioned above, many helmets, especially the China clones, are oversized.
At No Limits this weekend, a helmeted player was up in one of the guard towers on the island fort and I had no trouble hitting his helmet repeatedly from 100'. No doubt the player thought his entire head was below the window ledge while in reality it was exposed. Had he not been wearing a helmet his head probably would not have been visible.
