I was looking at getting a helmet but there both expensive and bulky so I decided to get a Boonie hat instead and a 360 paintball mask but I just wanted to now if getting a military type helmet is mandatory or just optional

No it isn't mandatory at all. You are free to wear whatever you want on the field. I personally love my helmet and find it very comfortable, but with a paintball mask it would probablly be hard to use a helmet along with the mask.

Coyotecommand, you already have one warning strike against you for what I assume is a grammar problem. I would suggest you start using proper grammar before you get another another warning increase from one of the mods; but as far as helmets...I love mine. I don't know how I went 2 years without one.

Well you could watch the commerce section. Often you can find cheaply priced ones. If you really want one sender a pm.

My buddy got his off weaponblender.com for cheap. There is a voodoo tactical Mich 2001 fiberglass one for around $40, it wouldn't be a bad starter helmet.

coyotecommand, I know you said you're trying to improve your spelling and grammar, but frankly, you need to try harder. You could at least click the spell check button before you post, it's right by the reply button. It won't catch everything, but it will certainly help.

If you're doing close quarters battle (CQB) events a helmet would be a good thing to have for protection. Even at outdoor events I don't think it's a bad thing to have something covering your melon. Some fields may require some type of face protection as well whether that's a full mask, balaclava, or shemagh. Make certain though whatever you employ doesn't interfere with your full seal eye protection goggles. Teeth can be capped, but your eyeballs are a different story. Job #1 for any rational individual is to protect their eyes during airsoft.
As far as grammar goes you should pick yourself up a copy of The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White. Awesome book that will teach you everything your overpaid public school English teachers never got around to teaching while you were in school. I know that it has helped me a great deal over the years to become a better writer.

Honestly while a helmet adds to any loadout you are trying to achieve, I am not a fan at all. My suggestion would be to ask a friend or someone at a game if you can borrow their's for a round to see if you like it. A simple baseball cap works great and you can still look BA as seen below:

I've always worn a helmet. I can think of maybe, two games in 4 years where I haven't worn a helmet. I obviously don't mind it at all and don't have ay issues that other people people so have with them. There are also 2 distinct memories I have where a helmet saved me from a lot of pain. Not to mention all the BBs/sticks/whatever that it's stopped from whacking me in the head.

Definitly get a helmet. Back when I was a backyard airsofter, all I had was a paintball mask. One day while playing one of my friends was literally about 5 feet away shooting me with 370fps on full auto to the top of my head. Now let me tell you, that shit hurt. Ever since then I've been using a helmet.

My friends have helmets that are just plastic replica's of the Current U.S. army style helmets that they got for only 8 bucks off of shortyusa. I personally think they look awesome and they give you the protection you need from an airsoft bb. They're SO much lighter than the real thing and work just as good. Also, since they're plastic, the bb creates a fairly loud snapping sound when they hit the helmet, so you'll know when your hit.
With regards, Bigbird

Honestly while a helmet adds to any loadout you are trying to achieve, I am not a fan at all. My suggestion would be to ask a friend or someone at a game if you can borrow their's for a round to see if you like it. A simple baseball cap works great and you can still look BA as seen below: I'm with Melson. I usually wear a baseball cap with a velcro patch on the front. The patch takes most of the pings that would hurt your dome and the rest of the fabric on the hat absorbs enough impact that it doesn't leave a mark on your head (that, and hair helps too). Helmets are bulky, hot, and make your head feel the size of a melon. Have you ever tried running with a bicycle helmet that was too big for you? That's what it feels like. Also, those really cheap $8-$20 helmets are disproportionate to the real thing. If you're going to make some sort of awesome helmet, at least drop $60 or $80 on one of the really nice replicas that are very close to the real thing. That or pick up an MSA MICH on ebay for $180.
