HISTORY: Haiti is a country with a violent history and devastating poverty. In 1959, President François 'Papa Doc' Duvalier created the Haitian Paramilitary Force known as Tonton Macoutes. The Tonton Mocoutes waged a war of terror against its foes. Usually targeting those who supported progressive social agendas in opposition to the ultra-conservative, neo-dictatorial president. Those who spoke out against Duvalier would mysteriously disappear into the night, never to be seen or heard from again.
Just the name “Tonton Macoutes” struck fear into the heart of the Haitian Citizenry. Originating in Creole Mythology, Tonton Macoute was the name of a demonic figure who roamed the streets at night, kidnapping children and storing them away in a gunnysack. These children were never seen again. Sadly, in this case, History began to parallel mythology.
In 1971, Francois Duvalier died and was succeeded by his son, Jean-Claude Duvalier. He continued the reign of terror begun by his father. Duvalier used the Tonton Macoute to maintain power until his overthrow in 1986.
MARCH 1983:Pope John Paul II Visits Haiti and declares “Something must change here…” citing a top-heavy economy that allowed too many privileges to the cultural elite and crushing poverty to those not born into wealth.
APRIL 1985:[/b City of Gonaives, Haiti, is the first city to revolt. With living conditions worsening, no health care, no middle class, and only a terrorist police force with its own agenda to depend on, the people organize and begin open riots in the streets.
JUNE 1985: Anti-Government Riots spread to 6 other major cities around Haiti. Jean Claude Devalier responds by closing independent radio stations and instituting a brutal crackdown on the citizenry by the Tonton Macoute.
