Storyline
December:
The Allied Coalition suffers heavy causalities at the Battle of Yonan, stalling the local offensive completely. The limited number of units available to dedicate to continuing the fight are scarce. The front line stalls completely; Coalition units consolidate their positions and dig in. Along with reinforcements by air, the first U.S. divisions brought in by sea arrive in country. These units, fresh from the United States; are immediately sent forward to what is now known as "The Bulge" to replace the battle weary forces there. These units include the 5th Light Infantry Division, as well as the 184th Airborne Brigade. The first of the South Korean main reserve division mobilize. As these fresh troops take up positions, they are constantly harassed by North Korean assaults. Weather conditions on the Korean Peninsula worsen as winter progresses. Temperatures plummet to -10 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.
January:
Coalition observers report massive troop movements, all along the DMZ. Military intelligence assumes this information represents an upcoming mass attack across the DMZ by North Korean forces, and any available reserve units are redirected away from the bulge to reinforce existing positions. A trapped pocket of 184th airborne are reported to be moving towards the bulge for extraction, after their successful destruction of a missile installation in the mountains. Weather conditions deteriorate further, the first major snow storm of the season strikes... Average temperatures fall below -15 degrees. North Korean troops use the snow-storm to their advantage, launching numerous small scale assaults on allied positions around the bulge. These attacks are assumed to be diversionary, as the majority of main action fighting is taking place in other military sectors. The first mass tank charges made by North Korean forces takes place near Ch’orwan, making small but strategically compromising bridgeheads across the DMZ.
Coalition forces commit 95% of the combined reserve to plug gaps in the line. 184th Airborne units; still the furthest north of any coalition brigade, report increased activity across their line as a second snow storm moves in.
Airborne units report North Korean forces behind their front line positions. 5th Division forces that held ground attaching the bulge with the rest of the DMZ have disappeared off the map. North Korean artillery devastates American secondary positions, destroying several key targets that make communication to units in the bulge difficult. Strength of North Korean forces attacking the bulge remains unknown. The remaining Coalition forces inside the bulge are now in immediate danger of being cut off.
