Went to the MTAC game friday with 2 others, here's my report:
I really like the field. They've put together a pretty nice setup, with a mock convenience store, bank, house, and other structures made of plywood, as well as an old cop car and a dumpster all in a warehouse. The people were all pretty cool too.
The staging area is really nice; tall, sturdy plywood tables for gear, plenty of space.
It would have been nicer if more people came, but that's not their fault as much as it is a new field.
As for constructive criticism, I had a couple things I think they should consider:
- They need to make clear where the boundaries of the field are, particularly to new players. I got shot twice from places I thought were not part of the field. This is a pretty minor complaint, just caught me off guard.
- The single biggest complaint I had was that a couple of the games went on way too long. One game turned into hide and seek, with the last member of one team hidden in the trunk of the police car. Another ended with two people holed up in the back of the bank, where the attackers kept looking like they were going to go in and try to finish them off, but finally giving up.
They played a game that was like dodgeball, with both teams confined to opposite halves of the room. It was a neat idea, but it also turned into a game where whoever could wait longer without getting antsy would generally win.
The organization of the game types could have been better, (honestly, defining an end point in case of a stale mate, or a time limit would be enough to fix it).
- My last complaint is that the spyops guys don't really use the forum to full effect. I almost DIDN'T go, because when I left for the game, the only people signed up to go were me, my brother, and my friend from out of town. It turned out fine, with 11 people total,(5 on 5 most of the night, then 5 on 6.), but it might have drawn more people if they had those numbers reflected on the roster.
Also, if you read this, you guys REALLY should put up some pics. They won't do the place justice, but they'll stir some interest. You did a HELL of a lot of work setting that place up. It looks professional and the props in the house (furniture, tv, beds, couches, etc), really are a nice touch. You could pull in some of the skeptical people if you could show them even 4 pictures of the various field sections.
After all that, the final review is that the place is new, getting used to running the games, and very well constructed. I will certainly try to get out there more often, since it's a lot closer to where I live than Farmington. If the people who post about wanting games in detroit city, saint clair shores, grosse pointes, or warren get out there too, they'll have plenty of business and plenty of chances to figure out the best game types to run in the setup that they have.
thumbs up.
