Background
Seven weeks ago, an organized guerrilla group calling itself the Kashmiri Independence Army (KIA) began a massive insurgency campaign throughout the tri-party controlled region of Kashmir. Using tactics similar to that of the “Tet Offensive” of the Vietnam War; the KIA causes widespread havoc but suffered massive causalities at the hands of the Chinese, Pakistani, and Indian militaries.
More recently though, the KIA had seized control of a newly discovered and constructed mining operation and began using it’s wealth to purchase arms and equipment. In addition the rebel force also seized several orchards and small farming operations; only to further their economic and military situation.
As of three weeks ago the KIA was practically wiped out by a combined air and land based strike by the Indian military. However, the tensions have not ceased. Having already moved a significant military presence in the area, all three victorious nations see no reason to leave…
Two weeks ago, a Pakistani platoon ambushes and kills all members of a Chinese patrol. China demands U.N. action against ‘Pakistani aggression’ and pushes for sanctions in the Security Council. The United States vetoes the proposal.
Ten days ago, an Indian construction company guarded by members of the 250th Infantry Division is massacred by members of an unknown Chinese unit. Survivors report being fired on and pursued by a Pakistani patrol.
One week ago with a second resolution is passed by the Security Council; a U.N. peacekeeping force is sent in. 50 French and Belgian peacekeepers are slaughtered on the road to the capital city of Srinagar. French and Belgian support waivers, both speak of withdrawing all peacekeeping forces from Kashmir.
Four days ago, a stinging report from the WHO claims widespread human rights abuses on all sides, mass murder, and a widespread humanitarian crisis. B.B.C. field reporters and other media agencies have been barred from the contested region. One reporter is quoted in saying: “The situation here is rapidly worsening. There are unconfirmed reports of all out war. The situation on the ground here is a powder keg, waiting for a spark…”
