I've been looking around on the web and I found a few videos showing how to do an airbrake modification to a bolt action airsoft rifle to increase its speed, and consequently, its accuracy(at least that is what the video claims). I am wondering what exactly this modification is, as in what is the reason it increases the air pressure being exerted on the bb? Is this modification detrimental to the gun in any way? Has anyone on here tried it before? I don't have any plans to actually perform this mod, as you have to cut of a part of the internals in the piston. Any information would be helpful. I'm just rather curious . Here's a link to one of the videos I found: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRQVY-R0XPk

I'm sorry I couldn't help but literally laugh out loud when I saw that guy's gun. It's as if he just kinda looked at a bush and said "This would look great on my gun." Didn't bother to paint or anything, just tied some shrubbery on there. Ni
From my understanding the airbrake mod is fairly simple. It lowers FPS based on the length of the tube inserted. But, it also lowers the gun's noise level considerably. Consistency would probably be about the same, and accuracy would be about the same being that it's tied with consistency. It doesn't increase air pressure on the bb it just slows down the compression at the end of the piston stroke. Which means the piston is moving slower when it strikes the cylinder head, which makes the gun more quiet.

People generally remove the airbrake. It is unnecessary. That guy has no idea what he is talking about. The airbrake is the white piece on the front of the piston. There would really be no effective way to put one on and for no reason at all.

Sorry, I thought the airbrake for rifles was the same as AEGs

If you have a stock piston, just cut the thing off, it's unneccassary and hinders your performance.

I am just curious, if you had one of these on a AEG would it be less damaging to the GB shell? I mean if the piston is slowed down before it strikes the front of the GB would it maybe increase the life of your shell with out adding a reinforced shell?

Not sure what AEG pistons would have an airbrake on them, I'm pretty confident just the Laylax spring rifle series has them.

I know that, I was just saying if you could put one on or they made AEG pistons with air brakes would it actually help save your GB shell?

Wouldn't it make more sense to just put a weaker spring in?

If you're referring to my post, then no. The purpose of an airbrake is to lower the sound level of an AEG.

That is what I was asking.

It accomplishes both, but if you're just looking to reduce stress on the gearbox then I would recommend a weaker spring, because it's much easier to install.
