I went so far as to contact the michigan branch of ATF and im trying to find the letter they sent me but they said any resale has to have the orange tip and that anything listed under .177 caliber was not considered in gun laws they were classified as toys but to treat it as a actual firearm when transporting it due to the fact of people confusing it for a real weapon . When i find the letter ill post it

We didn't need you to necropost until you actually had the letter. When you do post it, please punctuate according to the rules of the English language.

...anything listed under .177 caliber was not considered in gun laws they were classified as toys... Except that 177 caliber is 4.5mm and airsoft guns shoot a 6mm BB. So they are larger than .177 caliber which makes them fall outside of that legal statement. (I think they would be .243 caliber if I'm not mistaken.) What I think it means is that they didnt fully understand what you were asking them as they did not explicitly address is.

Treat your airsoft replica like a real gun and no one will get in trouble. It's pretty simple - common sense. But I guess common sense is uncommon nowadays. ;D That's is so true. I used to know a couple of idiots making fun at each other by pointing BB guns at each other in the mall, ignoring the circumstances that might happen when they get caught. Now I stray away from them or I might get into trouble. Always play with your guns on the field, and not in the mall, or some other public place where a lot of people converging. It may not fire like a real gun but it looks real and most people think it is real.

As long as it is not larger than a .177 caliber and not rifled. by the letter of the law, this only pertains to BB guns using the metal BBs .177 cal. it doesn't address the 6mm (.24 cal) BBs we use with our AEG/GBB/etc

Am I missing something? This pretty much says it's illegal to take off the orange tip in Michigan, right? On the galleries pretty much every single gun has the tip taken off...

Take this as a grain of salt, but I trust them enough to believe them.

Since the question was never answered, i find this a valid response to a necro post: I called my Cousin Matt. He's am Ingham county police officer, and he says it is not illegal to take it off. However he did say that if you are selling, shipping, showing it in public, or have it in a motorized vehicle it needs an orange tip.
He also feels its really important to reiterate: if someone sees a gun, orange tip or not, they will more than likely call the cops.
One last thing, he clearly says that all crimes committed with any airsoft gun will still be treated as a crime with a real gun. (robbery with a deadly weapon will still be the charge, regardless of it being an airsoft gun or RS.)
Tl:dr: It is not illegal to remove or spraypaint an orange flash hider UNLESS: you are transporting it, selling it, brandishing it or shipping it without an orange tip.

So you basically just repeated what I wrote earlier?

Yes, but you also said it was to be taken with a grain of salt. I wanted a confirmed answer, so i called him. They apparently have a book of these kind of things he was reading from.
I'm sorry if that's what it came of as, it really was an attempt to give an answer.
Sorry.
