Ok, so with the advent of a new section towards Lost and Found, I figured I should add a thread here about dummy cording your gear and preventing the lost of your sensitive items. By sensitive items, I am referring to things like your keys, your cellphone, wallet, etc.
So, first things first. Think about where you keep your sensitive items? Most people probably keep them in the pockets of their BDU's or whatever. Biggest problem with that is a lot of the pockets are either open or have large enough openings between the buttons that your gear can fall out. Back pocket is the best place for wallet in the BDU's, it has nice close buttons that don't let it fall out. No pocket has worked better for that.
So how do we prevent that from happening? You can first make sure that any item you put in those pockets CAN NOT fall out. Or put them somewhere else. For me I have a grenade pouch on my rigging that fits my cell phone and my vehicle keys. Grenade pouches work great for that, they're small, fit almost anywhere on vests, can be completely closed, and, most wonderfully of all, have loops for dummy cording items. There are all sorts of pouches that can fit almost all of your sensitive items, including sunglasses or, if you're needy enough to need your iPod, even that.
If you don't need it, which, most things you don't need, don't bring it. Check all you stuff out before you go to an event. If you don't need it out in the field, leave it at home, in the car, or with your collection of gear that you aren't going to be running around with all day. For me, I leave most of my "might need" stuff in my rifle bag. Anything I need for driving or my CLS bag (in case some n00bs hurt themselves) is left in my truck.
So with that said, I'll move on to dummy cording. Using the Grenade Pouch as the example, the two most important things you will probably have with you most of the time are keys and phone. So for me it's simple and reliable to just use 550 cord. So, tie one end into the looping in the pouch (or just the molle looping on your vest, chest rig, PC, etc) and do a square knot or any other knot that won't come undone. Using the loose end, tie it into your key ring do a decent not that won't come out until you make it. And the set up is the same with almost every cellphone, since most have their own hooks or loops for just that. You might not be able to fit 550 through it, but you can get a decent string or cord through it. The white string inside of 550 works great for that kind of thing.
There you have a pouch that holds your items at least semi-secure, and a cord that will keep it attached to you or at least your gear, should it fall out.
That basic stuff will let you secure all your stuff, and never lose those very key items. These basic principles will work with many many items that you may carry often, but just remember it's a lot easier to prevent lose than it is to find it again. Don't need it, don't bring it.
So you know, this is how you tie a square knot, this will hold decently well.
