Before there was the standard M-16 we know and use now, there was the AR-10. This was the first in the line of M-16's. This rifle made its debut in the 1950's. I just thought it was interesting and kinda neat when i found the site and the photos. Now I'm sure that some of you have seen these so this is for the people who haven't. Look at the improvements They made...

Yeah it's funny seeing what has changed. The first run failed all tests miserably, and if it wasn't for a rogue General in the Air Force (and friend of Eugene Stoner) disobeying orders and ordering it anyways, we wouldn't have the M16 of today.

Man that thing is ugly. Its crazy to think that out of any gun made, there is always some different customized version of it someone comes up with.

I do like the charging handle right under the carry handle, would probably be less problematic and easier to clear jams than the charging handle that's on the new M16s.

the AR-10 was never in the military trials as the M-14 beat it out. The only U.S. military significance the AR-10 has is that the AR-15 is it's little brother. The top pic is the Military trials prototype that never made ot to trials and the bottom pic is the AR-10B made for civilians. The AR-10 is chambered for .308.
Nice post man, the AR-10 is pretty sweet.

the AR-15 is chambered in a .223 remington. the rifles in the pictures were the early forms of the AR-10 which is chambered for .308.

Wich is what makes it a civilian rifle. Unless you have a stage/class 3 license.
