Yes Zorak the ground pounders had left overs from korea. As for the movie remember they said the m16 was new and they did have a lot of trouble with them.Caused a lot of guys to die ...malfunctions and jamming durring firefights. The movie and infantry company was baced on the new idea or air-assult.So they had new stuff to field test. For that time period.

What I never understood is why Seargent Major stuck with his pistol. I mean why not just get a Thompson, or an m14. I mean seriouslly, what the hell.

Not to get off topic here, but I'm reading a great book about the Vietnam war right now, it's called The Things They Carried.
It's a very detailed book about what soldiers carried, and how it helped and not-help survive.

Do you mean 'The Things They Carried' by Tim O'Brien? His other books, 'Going After Cacciato' and 'If I Die in a Combat Zone' are really good as well.

My 75% deet bug juice is on it's way. By the way, nice pics, CP, although unnecessary considering that you aren't planning on selling any of it . Thanks for the input. Big Ol' Edit: Got my 75% deet bug juice in the mail yesterday. It's exactly what I expected and I couldn't be more please. There were three variants of bottles: clear plastic bottle with lable printed directly on it, clear plastic bottle with lable on a sticker (what Jacko has, I believe) and a green bottle with the lable printed directly on the bottle. Mine is in the green plastic bottle. Not really much more to say about it than that. Here's the pics: I just keep chipping away at my shopping list the pics were for reference!! heheheh I told you I didnt want to sell any of it!! <nudge> But you have a nice setup and maybe we can skirmish soon cuz my team is wanting to do a NAM scenerio. keep in touch! -CP

I got my deactivated 7.62mm rounds in the mail today. Check it out: Also got my boots a few weeks ago (not really worth pics). My flak jacket and mitchell helmet cover are on their way in the mail and I'm currently in the middle of a transaction to get myself a 1911a1. I'm really chipping away at my list to make my look complete.

Starting to look real good! Definitely post when you get the flak jacket, I'd like to see how well-preserved it is. Mine is really good except for some big stains but no rips or tears.

The M-16 was deployed to Vietnam along with the first cav under the name XM-16E1. This varient had the addition of a tear drop shaped forward assist. www.mooremilitaria.com/reference.htmscroll on down to the M-16 content.

With several significant purchases, I have chosen to update the thread concerning my vietnam gear. Let's do a fresh rundown of my stuff: - M1 steel pot helmet w/ mitchell cover, scrim band, toilet paper, salem cigs, p38, 7.62mm rounds, 75% deet bug juice, and matches. I actually lost 2 of my rounds and the toilet paper. I'm working on recovering them - Historically inaccurate BDUs, Woot! They're close enough for me. I've attached private rank patches and a 9th infantry division patch. - Webgear including suspenders, web belt, buttpack, m14 mag pouch, .45 holster, bayonet and sheath, compass/first aid pouch, and dual canteen pouches. - OD t-shirt (buried among other gear) - Dog Tags - Neckerchief - KJW Colt 1911a1 single-stack - Jungle boots with socks. - Flak Jacket I believe the only new purchases since my last update are the 1911, the neckerchief, the flak jacket, and the compass/first aid pouch. The story of the flak jacket is kind of odd. When I bought it, I knew it wasn't from the right era. I picked it because it was close enough for my taste and the price was right. I thought I'd be able to identify and date it with text found on the vest but alas, there is none to be had. I have modified the vest slightly to make it look more accurate (I plan on adding grenade loops as well) so it won't be identifiable from my pics (although I have a pic of the vest in original condition posted at the bottom if someone would be able to enlighten me). The vest I'm wearing in the pics has no grenade loops and has kevlar inserts as opposed to ballistic nylon. While bulky, I don't really find it that hindering. It weighs about thirteen pounds. The funniest part is what I found in the pocket upon the vests arrival: an illegal substances pipe . Here are the pics of me all suited up! Forgive the pictures. My crippling laziness didn't allow me to take them in the daylight. Here's my new 1911. I had to mod my holster to get it to fit. And here's the pic of the vest in it's original condition. If anyone can tell me anything about it, it would be infinitely appreciated. Enjoy, everyone!

Looking good. Your web belt should ride underneath your flak jacket.
