I've got a few ideas for helmet grafitti. I don't wanna make it too busy, but I won't deny any ideas if they wow me. Got pics that include my new purchases: Let's do a run-down of all the gear in the pics. There's a lot of new stuff from the last time I snapped pictures. - M1 Steel pot helmet (with cateye band, p38 can-opener, C-Ration matches, Salem C-Ration cigs, toilet paper - I got some dogtags made at the perimeter. They have my name on the first line; 'Nightcrawler' on the second; and 'MI Airsoft' on the third. The 2 remaining lines are empty. - An OD tee-shirt. - I have OD trousers and a blouse. I recently added patches that would designate me as a private and a 9th infantry division patch (if any of it looks crooked, it's because I'm kind of drowning in that blouse ) - My webgear consists of an era belt and and H-harness, a dual pistol mag pouch, 2 canteens w/ pouches, an era buttpack, an era holster custom painted by yours truly, a bayonet and sheath, and an era m14 mag pouch with grenade loops. -I'm wearing magnum stealth boots in the pics. I hope to soon replace them with jungle boots (Phil had a bunch of unissued boots from '67 the other day, all too small ) -Oh yeah, and I'm wearing replica era socks ;D My 75% deet bug juice is on it's way. Let me know what ya'll think. Thanks in advance

Looking better and better, Nighty! A couple of gear tips: - Your H-suspenders are worn too low. The pistol belt they attach to should be clear of your bottom blouse pockets, so you can get into them without fussing with the belt. The belt should be between the bottom of the top pockets, and the top of the bottom pockets. It'll feel odd, wearing it so high up, but it's easier to get mags out that way.
- It's up to your personal preference, but SOP has mag pouches mounted more towards your front, near the belt buckle. That bit of webbing with a clip on it attached to your magpouches is supposed to clip onto the rectangular metal ring at the bottom of your suspender shoulder pads.
- Your pistol holster should be tied (loosely, now) to your right leg with a black shoelace. The bayonet probably doesn't need to be tied to your leg.
- A Mitchell pattern helmet cover goes a long way towards completing the look
- The same sentiment applies to a first-aid/compass pouch, which goes on the left shoulder.
- Get that gear dirty, soldier: you look like a REMF!

Chyeah, it'd look better dirty. Also, you need to work on your face during pictures, you seem to look like your about to cry or something good luck with that, and i hope to get mah own gear someday... that and an automatic. oh p.s. I think it'd look nice if you were to alter the picture to make it look like a true 'nam pic.

Nighty if you didn't live in all the way out in holland I have about fifty empty backs of Lucky Strikes I could give you. In my opinion it would look a lot more authentic, seeing as that pack of Salem's is very thin and feminine like. Also, it wouldn't matter that the packs are recent, seeing as the lucky strike pack has not changed since before world war 2.
Anyways, this is a great set-up, it looks really authentic. I have to agree though you look like a NFG. Get it dirty.

Two items your outfit is missing: A pack of Lucky Strikes or Marlboro Red's, and/or some brass or deactivated ammunition.

Just some advice, watch out with that deet. Its not good for you, if you absolutely don't need to put in no your uniform, then don't. I've seen some guys get pretty sick from that crap.
He's right about your web belt, it should be around your natural waistline. The shoulder pads should be even with your breast pockets. Your blouse and pants are the wrong layout, but I don't think thats a big issue. If you want to be accurate though, you need slanted. Also depending on the year you are going for, a black and yellow US army tape, and a white and black name tape. That was early Nam though, watch we were soldiers they had it right. You should be able to find some OD Jungle boots in a surplus store somewhere also, just make sure they have the panama sole on them. A small alice pack always looks cool too. Last thing, you can get the Nam era flak vests for around 20 bucks, i've seen them cut on the inside, gutted, and filled with a foam filler to take the weigh away. Then you are left with the look. Just an idea.

A little note on We Were Soldiers, thay had everything right except the weopons. The movie was based in 1965, all their weopons were M16s. So correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't they all have M14s?

A little note on We Were Soldiers.... The movie was based in 1965, all their weopons were M16s. So correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't they all have M14s? Nope, the movie and book got it right. The Army ordered and deployed thousands of M16s on an experimental basis (before it was supposed to be called "M16", even) as early as late 1964. Curt LeMay's SAC had them for airfield defense as early as 1962. The M14 was widespread until about 1966 or so, but there isn't a clear-cut divide when you can say nobody used M14s in Vietnam. That's a good thing for Airsoft re-enactors: you can buy an M14, M16, M16A1, or XM177E (as well as many of their carbine variants and with short mags or long mags) and be historically accurate for nearly any Vietnam time period. If you're doing a pre 1970's impression, you could even run with an M1 Carbine, Thompson (thanks, Zorak), or M3 Greasegun - all valid alternatives to the early M16s which were met with constant failures due to improper ammunition, non-chromed bore, and lack of cleaning kits.

For completeness, weren't there guys carrying M1 carbines and Thompson guns around Vietnam too?

Also, M1 garands, and Springfield '03s saw use as sniping/dmr, however I only know of rare accounts of this in the early years of Vietnam.

Nighty if you didn't live in all the way out in holland I have about fifty empty backs of Lucky Strikes I could give you. In my opinion it would look a lot more authentic, seeing as that pack of Salem's is very thin and feminine like. What could be more authentic than a real pack of cigs from an actual '67 C-Ration? The package is slim because there are only four cigarettes to a box. Standard for the boxes at the time. Can't get more authentic than the pack that I got. Two items your outfit is missing: A pack of Lucky Strikes or Marlboro Red's, and/or some brass or deactivated ammunition. Don't worry, I'm keeping my eye out for deactivated ammo. I think I have cigs covered. Just some advice, watch out with that deet. Its not good for you, if you absolutely don't need to put in no your uniform, then don't...Your blouse and pants are the wrong layout, but I don't think thats a big issue. If you want to be accurate though, you need slanted... Also depending on the year you are going for, a black and yellow US army tape, and a white and black name tape... You should be able to find some OD Jungle boots in a surplus store somewhere. I can't not have my deet in my helmet. Then my forum position would be in vain I knew that my non-slanted pockets weren't 100 percent accurate when I bought the bdus. I'm just trying to get close enough. I could drive myself crazy picking out everything that's a little off. I'm probably gonna hold out for the name tape. I'd probably get it custom made but it'll get done. Army tape shouldn't be too hard to find. Rest assured, Phil's has a wall full of army boots. I'll be taking home a pair of my own the next time I'm up there. Enki, as per your advice, I can't thank you enough. I'll move up my suspenders and clip my mag pouch to them straight way. Regarding my bayonet, I had to fit it on a much wider belt before so I modified the sheath. It's much looser now and actually does need to be tied to my leg and it doesn't bother me. I'll get that shoelace slapped on my holster asap. I'm eyeing mitchell covers on ebay. I'm slow to get my own, but it'll get done. I've actually been having trouble finding a compass and pouch. Phil doesn't carry them and the ebay prices are pretty steep. Thanks for the input, everyone. EDIT: I'm totally with everyone about how I need to dirty my bdus up. Still looking for my shot to play. I won't be getting my M14 for a while and my pdw is currently on the injured bench.

My 75% deet bug juice is on it's way. By the way, nice pics, CP, although unnecessary considering that you aren't planning on selling any of it . Thanks for the input. Big Ol' Edit: Got my 75% deet bug juice in the mail yesterday. It's exactly what I expected and I couldn't be more please. There were three variants of bottles: clear plastic bottle with lable printed directly on it, clear plastic bottle with lable on a sticker (what Jacko has, I believe) and a green bottle with the lable printed directly on the bottle. Mine is in the green plastic bottle. Not really much more to say about it than that. Here's the pics: I just keep chipping away at my shopping list
