Steel wool of various grades can do a wonderful job of removing paint from metal surfaces and leave a fairly nice finish depending on what grade you use...
Start coarse and work up to fine. More "0" = finer grade.

I never liked the results I got from steel wool mite, even the 0000 to prep steel for blueing. But this is personal opnion
Im polishing a piston from a 14 Liter Cummins Diesel for a friend right now, and 600 grit wet/dry works great before polishing compound.
Anyone who is reading this, feel free to experament. What works for me my not neccicarily work well for you. There is nothing wrong with steel wool for stripping/prepping metal for polish. Just remeber, the more time you take and patience you provide, the better the reesults
