ummm I have a feeling you havn't done much reasearch into this your self but we won't get into that . The RIS refers to the Rail on the bottom front where you can attach various things such as lazers flash lights M203 ect if they fit on a Rail system. the standard M4 dosn't have this rail. BTW befor you buy a airsoft gun I sujest you read up more on them but you are posting on the forum so you are on your way

it usually swaps out with the front grip and allows you to attach Weaver rail accessories such as tactical flashlights, scopes, and grenage launchers

You don't *need* the mock laser unit to store the battery for your M4A1 RIS, though it's helpful, if you don't want to be a slave to you Mini battery. The mock laser unit makes it possible for you to carry a large battery, in lieu of the mini.

Whoa, maybe I'm confused here, but Motown, the M4A1RIS does not hold any kind of batteries on it unless you attach the faux laser unit. The RIS system does not have any space to insert a battery into unless you heavily modify it (which I've seen happen before).
In addition, the Marui faux laser unit only has enough space to jam in an 8.4 mini battery. The 9.6 minis don't even fit. Perhaps you are talking about the ICS units that hold much larger batteries?
Bait-yes, he used an M4 with RIS system (RIS is commonly referred to/actually called RAS: Rail Accessory System) in Tears of the Sun with an Aimpoint w/cantilever mount, and some other goodies...I can't remember, though.

Okay, bait, here the skinny on RIS; as others have pointed out, it's a rail system that allows you to mount accessories. But the important thing about RIS is that it's not just the bottom or top of the foreguard, but both sides as well. So if you wanted to lug the weight around, you could have your battery pack on one side, your M203 slung underneath, a tactical light on the other side, and an aimpoint sight or real laser on top.
That's a lot of crap festooned from your gun, but hey, goodies have their uses. The beauty of RIS is the it's easy to add or remove items, because most accessories mount to standard rails. Before RIS, if you wanted to add or remove an M203, you had to swap out the entire foregrip assembly (which on a real M4 at least is a pain-in-the-ass). For airsoft, this allows you to keep your M203 on for field skirmishes, but quickly and easily remove it for CQB games. Similarly, you can quickly swap other gear in and out quickly, letting you configure your gun however you want it with a minimum of fuss. That's why SpecOps guys like it.

My bad on the RIS deal, I thought we were talking just the add on rails, that you can screw on to the exisiting handguard (somebody at WT was toting one) Though if you buy the Mosquito Molds RIS, you can carry a mini battery in the grip. All depends how much you want to spend, or how cool you want it to look As for the laser unit, yea the Marui laser dealy is the small one, but I think the ICS version looks more like the real deal (and the fact that you can carry the larger battery)

Bait, if your looking to put a little money into your m4 and want a ris system on it then i have a good solution. my gun was from uncompany.com and i got the TM m4a1, G&G sd kit, and a ready mag system. the sd kit comes with the removable silencer that allows you to put on a orinal looking barrel (the barrel and silencer both uncrew and can be swapped in about 10 seconds). that the ready mag system looks like another mag clamped on but it holds a large battery in the hollowed out mag body, this does require the rewireing of the gun to allow the battery to plug in back there. oh btw the sd kit has rails all around and it full metal.
