Although cool, I would say that the M1A1 Thompson SMG, would be the last airsoft gun you'd want to get-in terms of practicality. It's difficult to upgrade, and even then (from what I hear) the range isn't all too great. Its more a show piece, than an effective skirmishing weapon.
Stick with the M and AK series, and choosing from those two, is dependent on what look your'e going for.

not sure how contructive this advise is going to be but
The ak47 is a good gun reliable, if you like the look of it, I owned a ak by tm, only thing I didn't like was the lack of attachments. You can give it a scope and real wood but thats about it. ( or change it using a conversion kit )
The m1a1 I have no idea on check reviews for it I couldn't immagin it being much different then a regular tokyo marui gun but I have no idea here the lack of attachments would also apply.
the M16a2 is a good riffle and has numerous atachments but it is rediculusly big also if you didn't like the m4 I don't think you will like a2, it's basicly a m4 with solid stock and a longer barrel.
basicly the best gun for you is exactly that THE BEST GUN FOR YOU no one can make this decission for you, they can just tell you what you could find out if ya searched around but thats what the forums are here for help. so to sum it up get the gun you like the most if it dosn't work sell it and try again ;D
