Which gears on a stock M4 are plastic and which are metal? And of the metal gears, what metal are they made of? I just took apart my used M4 to fix the selector and I found that all of the gears are metal. The gear that meshes with the motor apears to be steel and the others aluminum. I though some of them were suposed to be plastic. I was just wondering if this guy who owned it before me put in different gears and didn't tell me.

As far as I know, all stock Tokyo Marui gears are metal. Granted, they're cheap metal, but metal nonetheless.

Thanks. How many shims should be on each gear? When I took apart the mechbox, the spur gear had three on the bottom and none on top. The rest of them looked right but I was just wondering how many should be on each one.

Check HERE for more information on proper shimming. [lower part of page]

Also check out this image from the Manuals section at AirsoftPlayers: airsoftplayers.com/m4/m4_5.jpg It shows the number of each size shim that should be on each gear in a stock M4 gearbox. If there's metal bushing or newer gears in there it will most likely change the way you have to shim it, so consult that link Hado posted. Even on a stock gearbox the method in that link would be good to use, just to make sure everything is moving like it should.
