How effective are throat mikes? I'm not very good at finding things on the internet, do any of you know where I could find them wicked cheap?

Cheap throat mics suck. Munin had a Radio Shack that went to shit on him, and several GK guys have had Foxfire rigs go south. Pryme makes a nice one, although for some reason it won't work with Garmin Rino units. Merrick and I use the Iasus Sniper-B, which goes for a little over $100. I recommend ordering it from Cleaer Communications and getting their optional throat mic strap as well.

IMHO I've never seen a throat mic that works remotely as well as a regular mic. Even with zorak/merricks, I was still having trouble understanding them. Course, I dont hear it all the time either, so I'm not used to the sound.... It's just wierd.

Part of the problem with mine was that I wasn't monitoring its location. After a certain amount of crawling through brush and otherwise contorting myself, the transducers can shift around, at which point sound quality goes through the toilet. I've never had anyone complain about sound quality when it's positioned properly.

So if you have a good neck band thing, they will work fine even with cheap ones?

My makeshift mouth guard does sacrifice a good deal of clarity over the radio. That is most likely why it would be difficult to understand me.
But the Iasus sniper-B has still been the most consistent and reliable mic I have ever used. Most throat mics I've seen have only one transponder which means if it wanders out of position on your neck your transmission will be ineffective. The Iasus has two transponders and therfore doubles the chance of sucessful transmission even if the mic wanders.
but I think it's like what Warmonger said

So if you have a good neck band thing, they will work fine even with cheap ones? If you have a good neck band, cheap ones work fine until they break. None of ours lasted a month before breaking. I consider the Foxfire to be a complete waste of money. $100 or so is the least you can pay for one worth buying.

As promised, here is my review of the Pryme SPM-1500 throat mic. I'd appreciate any feedback on my review, so that i can improve my style. www.predatorairsoft.com/throatmicreview/Pryme.htmlI have a side by side comparison of two popular brands of tactical gloves in the works; Hatch vs. Hellstorm.

Hey I use a 14 dollar throat mic from radio shack and have been useing it for a while I found that if you don't have raspy voice than people can hear and understand you fine and visa versa. Personally I don't care for throat mics but it's better then haveing people hear your radio go off all the time.
