This is probably a stupid question, but if I buy a Vest that says the mag puches are M16 size, will that hold AK mags?

Almost certainly not. AK mags are significantly longer. You'll notice that manufacturers such as Tactical Tailor make AK, .308 and M16 pouches since they are all so different.

In reality they will hold AK mags, though not very well. It is recommended you buy a vest that was made for AK magazines, however… AR15 style mag pouches will hold AK mags… not recommended, but they will.

As Viking said, the pouches will hold AK mags, but only if its a 2 mag pouch (meaning it was designed to hold TWO M16 mags), then it can hold 1 AK mag. The BHI vests w/adjustable lids hold them fairly well.

And to be quite honest about my BH vest, my AK mags are much easier to take out than the M16 mags were. The only problem is the lip on the bottom of the magazine, but a little electrical tape and a touch of creativity fixes it up just fine.
offtopic: real-steel AK mags fit better in a BH when you turn them upside down but don't do that with an AK hi-cap, but with standards you can usually get away with it though
