What do you all think of ghillie suits. Are they worth it? Do you use them?

to me? not worth it at all.
i'm too impatient to use them... gotta keep moving...
I've only seen a couple people use them... but realistically, at the short range airsoft combat occurs at, anyone in a ghillie will be, and has been, noticed quite quickly...
It's been my experience that good cover and concealment pays out more than a ghillie suit.

Some of my concerns with a Ghillie would be heat, and weapon placement. As it's gotta be hot to be in that much burlap, and I can't see where I could carry enough mags and guns to be happy ;D Aside from the fact that I would assume changing mags would also be more cumbersome, I personally may at some point build one. But I first need to pick up a rifle capable of shooting further than stock AEG's. Either way I think it's more a personal decision than anything, if you can make it work for you, more power to you.

one of my concerns that hasn't been brought up is feeling your hits, or even hearing them. Not saying you meant to be cheating or not, but its gotta be hard to tell if you are hit under a ghillie suit.

I personally like using my ghillie suit, It probably doesnt help too much because of the short range, but I like airsoft for its realism
My position is sharpshooter, and I try to be like Military Snipers as much as possible, however there are many many tasks an airsoft player would never have to perform that could perfectly emulate real world snipers, one of the ways in which I try to be more like Military Snipers is using a ghillie suit

Yes, but wearing a ghillie suit in order to "be like" a military sniper is sort of pointless. Like anything else used by the military, a ghillie suit is a tool. If the airsoft scenario you are playing requires patience, stealth, reconaissance, etc, a ghillie suit could be a useful piece of kit. If not, it's just taking up weight.
It always cracks me up to see guys in full ghillie kit running around on what amount to speedball fields (i.e. fields that offer very little natural concealment), or using ghillie suits that are completely unsuited to the local vegetation/groundcover. It also cracks me up to see them moving quickly from hide to hide, since the human eye tracks very strongly to movement, which negates the whole purpose of a camouflage ghillie.
In my mind, ghillie suits are like upgraded sniper-rifles in airsoft: not terribly useful for most games/fields. Very few games are long-term enough to reward the kind of patience and skill that real snipers use in getting into position to either observe the enemy or take a shot. Few scenarios can accurately model the kind of chaos and confusion that a good sniper can sow by eliminating key targets in the enemy's command and control structure. Further, many fields aren't big enough to really reward stealth (how many times have you played games where you started out being able to see where the opposing side was?). And finally, some fields or scenarios are just too short-ranged to allow for the proper engagement distance. You wouldn't take an upgraded APS2 to a CQB event, or if you did you'd be sitting out all day.
Ghillie suits are the same - cool, but not always useful.

I'ma have to jump on the bandwagon here ;p I'd think that a ghille suit wouldnt be very effective in airsoft... Basically, it'd be for "the look". However, I'm putting together a sniper setup, and I plan on including a headwrap and maybe a rifle bag... those are the only pieces that I could see as being useful (your head is a very distinct shape, as is a black gun imho). I'm not springing for a full suit, but I'd like to build one someday for the experience. I built a paitball ghille.... but.... it's, uhm, interesting. I'll have to get pics of it sometime.
I'll also agree with ICE here.. It'd be a bit harder to feel hits through a ghillie, although I don't think it'd be *that* much harder... unless it's an extremely thick suit.

Ghillie suits are effective in airsoft. Like munin said a ghillie suit is a tool. They work well with the right weapon, terrain, and if the op warrents one. They work better in long games with many players where you have time to do recon, guard a flank, etc. Other than that they are to heavy to be useful. I keep one in my bag of tricks, but I've hardly used it.

Like Talisman said, the only pieces I'd use are a hood and rifle wrap...though rifle wraps can be bad too sometimes (like the fall day Frostee wrapped his APS2 in brown burlap...he was the easiest person to see all day ). That said, I don't own a ghillie, and probably never will. I can't stand sitting still, and I hate being uncomfortable in my gear...and it seems to me that a ghillie would be very uncomfortable, especially in warm weather.

By the time you've seen the glean, its already too late. Might as well chime in... ghillies are great if you have the right environment and conditions. I made one, but haven't seen a use for it yet.

I made one, but haven't seen a use for it yet. Grunt22's field is perfect, and as of yet, the only place I have deemed suitable for using a ghillie

I made a guile suit acouple of years ago and have used it four or five times. Most of the time it ended up being heavy and kind of in the way but, when you are ten feet away from your enemy and they have no idea it feels good to pull that triger.
