Face and head, except the eyes.
The only real protection that a balaclava will give you is fairly good welt protection (though you could still get welts), and of course, some from the cold.

Mouth protection, too. Helps save teeth

A balaclava will only give you slight, if any, protection from teeth breakage- there are numerous people who can testify to that. While it's better than nothing, it won't offer nearly the same prevention as other methods of protection.

Well, one in so many words, isn't "tacticalized." Sure they may be the same basic thing, but on the same note, you don't buy BDU's and call them camo slacks.
I suppose if you really felt to get techinical, balaclavas (most) offer some sort of flame retardancy as the last necessary protection for the user/users head. A ski mask is regarded as a garment to cut down wind chill, and retain body temperature.

A balaclava also has one hole for your entire face (though it's typically worn with the just the eyes exposed), wheras a ski-mask has separate holes for each eye and the mouth.

Its so when a swat team makes swiss cheese of some puke his family cant sue you ;D But in airsoft it works well in darkness for blacking out our big peach colored heads, and taking some sting out of head shots... also- balaclava=good guy ski mask=bad guy

i'm bring this post back.
What is the difference between blackhawks' polypro and fire retardent balaclavas.
I bought the polypro and I thought I heard that they were used for cold weather ops (which would explain my overheating...)
If so, do they make any balaclavas that are thinner without the cotton on the inside?

The fire retardant balaclava is probably made from Nomex. I know several companies offer nomex balaclavas. I don't, however, know anything about how nomex performs in regards to retaining/releasing heat. I'm sure a few people here have nomex gloves and could relate some helpful info.

I've a nomex balaclava and an off brand polypropylene, and to me they seem about the same.
My hatch Nomex balaclava is of course thinner, however, to reiterate, they seem to me about the same for keeping my head warm.

I actually caught a bb in my mouth this weekend. i was taking on full auto fire and i was hit. I opened my mouth to call it and said " hit, hit, argh" I thought it was pretty funny, luckily i did not choke on it. I did however get a nice welt on my tongue .
