Ok ive heard some people asking about ghillie suits so i thought i would take it upon myself to help answer their questions. Ghillie suits are a special kinda camo named after the ghillies who where skilled hunters who hunted very evasive birds. these suits are made out of some kind of netting and then draped with burlap of some kind of material. my ghillie suit is a tracker style " meaning its a top with a hood" ghillie suit and is made of shrimp netting and dyed jute fiber. It is in my pure opinion that the best most effective breed of these suits are hand constructed and hand dyed using 5-10 different colors to match your surroundings.

... Actually, they originated from Scottish Gamekeepers, used them to hide from/catch pouchers (SP?) ... Anyways, if people are wondering about them, I'll be more than happy to help as well, PM me, or IM me, and or e-mail, and I'll help best I can.
I've made three suits so far, 1 being a full body poncho, the second a "tracker", and the third being a backside only ghillie. I've also made several rifle wraps.

Correct me if im wrong, but isnt it the word Sniper came from very skilled hunters that hunted a bird called a snipe? Did you mean that? or are ghillies really hunters?

Really "Sniper" Orginated somewhere uknown, but yes, the Snipe rumor is one of many out there.
And I believe he just got the two mixed up... but Ghillie's came from the Scottish game keepers.

i think the rumor of the sniper coming from the soldiers who were so accurate that they could hit a "Snipe" which was a small bird who whas very cautious and spooked easily so the only way you could kill one was to shoot it from long range, hence "Sniper"

Yep, thats what I said, I think I saw a thing about it on the history channel. They talked all about the hunters that hunted the snipes and then the name becoming sniper. But from what I understand there is no real proof about any of it.....so......who knows.

It's not too terribly hard. Just get burlap, dye, a flightsuit (or bdus) and a needle and thread. Dye the burlap into the pattern you desire, then start sewing it on.

Sewing isn't hard, so long as you have the dexterity of a monkey at the very least. Needle/thread gets pushed through one way, out the other, until you're out of fabric. Then, just knot the loose pieces (or just double stitch it, and tie the two ends together) For sewing, especially a ghillie suit, I doubt that the profiency of your sewing skills matters, so long as you make sure you stitch it more than once, as well as being able to proclaim that you've "done it all by yourself"

I already know this... Ross PunisheR Punisher, It is really only as complicated as you want to make it. You can make a decent looking and wearing wrap, poncho or hood using only the skills of being able to use scissors and tie your own shoes. I am referring to the fishnet and jute ghillies. You can find plenty of these types, priced in all ranges, on ebay. search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=ghillie+suitsMost of the suits listed are the jute type. I made a jute headwrap and cape last spring and it turned out fine. All that is required is the kit, a pair of scissors, the ability to tie a knot and plenty of time. I believe it took over 8 hours of tying time. That was the most difficult part, only because it was boring. If you really don't like the jute for some reason, you can also just purchase burlap, make it into strips, and tie that onto the fishnet. Of course, you can take the more difficult route and make a BDU or flight suit style ghillie. If you chose this route I've got a video that can help, but it will definitely require more time, money and "art and crafts" skills. ;D

Ive made two main ghillie suits, one being burlap and the other entirely of jute thread, i found that i absolutely HATE the burlap one, i have since gotten rid of it and use only my ghillie suit made of jute
however the entire burlap ghillie suit took me about 10 hours to build (glue gun) and the entire jute ghillie suit took me upgwards of 40 hours to build
P.S. Yep, scottish gamekeepers called ghillies that wore what we call ghillie suits (though somewhat more primitive), "Sniper" is meant as a person of great markmanship that is able to shoot snipe, a small elusive bird as stated above

Did you guys have a kit to make yours? I am getting a kit sometime soon to make a full head to toe suit out of a pair of BDU's. Anyone got some tips to help me out in this. Thanks
