air drop!? Bah... I'm going for realism... no speops team would drop in equipment when in a hot zone. It is a sure fire way to get attacked.

Only take what the op requires.

exactly, but if it is a 2 nighter you're going to need spare everything, food, and a sleeping bag or mosquito net.

You're going to carry a sleeping bag with you on the op? If you're have a safe enough place to sleep, leave the bag there. Don't carry everything on you for the whole day, thats what way points and bases are for.

You're very right... I read McNab's SAS book and he talked about hauling the ruck with him and leaving it at a check point before engaging the enemy.
That is what I plan to do. Carry the backpack everywhere, but if we mount an assault or ambush I'd take it off for the duration.

UPDATE (3/22/04)
Well after a while of waiting I have finally recieved my Blackhawk DOAV.
What can I say. This vest is beautiful... no wonder Delta uses it. I'll write a very short review real quick.
Thin guys are going to have a problem with this vest. I'm currently 280lbs. and it only took minor modification to make it fit... and there is a shit load more room for expansion. I'm speculating it is for kevlar underneath. I'm amazed at how well this vest fits. The DOAV is basically an Omega Tec on drugs. It is a similar fit but much looser. I typically have problems with vests fitting my longer abdomen, but this sucker has disconnected shoulder velcro which allows for a very large range of size adjustments (similar to a LBV rather than a typical assault vest).
Like I expected from talking with people, the day packs are absolutely worthless. If this vest was designed for the Delta Force how could of these things been approved. They are not tightly secured to the back of the vest by their four clips. Each one sags about 2-4 inches off and down the vest... I'm figuring they'll jiggle and make a lot of noise when you run. Also they are very small for what you'd expect. I can barely fit two t-shirts in each one. Inevitably I'm going to ductape the clips to the back and use an Eagle 3 day pack.
Storage wise... it is incredible. I think I could do a 7 day game in the woods and have no problem with ammo or batteries. There are two internal map pockets within the vest (not accessible while wearing obviously). There are 4 mag pouches with elastic inside for holding 3 armalite mags each (that is 12 total!!!) There are 5 pistol mag pouches, however I'm sure they are also used for knives, strobes, lights, etc. There is one map pouch on the right breast. On either side of the armalite mag pouches there is a large general purpose/canteen pouch. Some people have complained about their size, however... you could fit a dozen batteries in one for extended ops, perhaps even some wrenches for one scene repairs. The other could roughly 6-8+ bags of excel bbs! Packing 20,000 plus bbs and 12 clips makes that 7 day estimate sound reasonable. On a side note... you could take off the top day pack and use the bottom one by itself as a pseudo-buttpack... but what the hell else are you going to put in it.
Build quality: very impressive. Blackhawk seems to get a bad rap from some guys, but as a loyal customer I've never had any equipment failure. This vest is at the top of BHI's line up. It feels solid (and unfortunately the weight reflects it). Both shoulder pads feature anti-slip, which is of better quality than what is on the omega tecs. While this is a large vest I don't think overheating is too much of an issue. It is made mostly of cordura webbing so ventilation is optimal. Also, if that is not enough you can unzip the front and keep it open via two adjustable clips.
Overall this is an excellent vest. I have no regrets buying it over the Arktis Commando vest. I'll post pictures when my camera is up and running.

Excellent, Kaz, I'm very interested in seeing some pics. I considered buying the BHI packs, but after reading a little more about them, I just ordered (yesterday, in fact) a Tactical Tailor 3-Day pack.

Special forces odas often rely on air drops for resupply and for suppy of thier indiginous comrades....They also like to travel light and pack tight....as it is often necessary to beat a hasty retreat... I also like blackhawk gear even though its made in vietnam...

i cant speek for SOG nor do i know there S.o.p I was in a light infantry Division. We humped everything. The only things we took for the filed were combat issue. LBE complete,Med and or Large ruck. ruck pack.........socks,rain poncho or gortex jacket, entrenching tool,5 quart canteen, pancho liner(field blanket) 1 extra pair of BDU's ,shave kit ,camo stick insect replellent,1 flash light ,weapons cleaning kit w/clp(oil) and 1 MRE. Obviously the op dictated the equipment.a lot of times we did carry additional equipment with our normal list.I.E. claymores, additional ammo ,c-4,and mortor rounds. Now generlly equipment is road marched to navigation point then a patrol base is set up.Thats where the ruck stayed.Minimal equipment for ambush. As light as possiable.
