Can anyone explain to me (or give a link) how a high cap mag works? I've read that they rattle, and that some are bad (P90) and others are good (ak)... How do they work? I guess they are completely different than normal mags, right?
What is this 'winding' thing also? How often do you have to 'wind' a high cap?
I've looked in many forums, and on a bunch of web pages, and I only ever find things like "I don't like high caps" and "They are great for cover fire"... What makes them bad? I mean, more bbs is better? Are the bbs just in a pool, so they rattle and make noise? I really don't understand.
Im thinking of buying an aeg this spring, and really don't know what to do as far as magazines. Any help at all would be appreciated, because I know nothing about high cap magazines.
Thanks, ferret

Highcaps are essentially a bunch of BB's that are moved in a conveyer type manner back up into the chamber, so the BB's are loose in a chamber in the mag(hence the rattle unless they are full which gives you less room for the BB's to move around). So you wind the spring tight(little wheel on the bottom of the mag) and it keeps tension on the stack of BB's feeding into the chamber. You normally need to wind a mag every 70-120 rounds or so, I've never really counted as usually I'm shooting full auto when I get to my highcaps. It's really not a big deal and they do have some issues but not enough in my opinion to avoid them, they are a cheap easy way to hold allot of ammo. If you have the money and are looking for more realism then go with lowcaps or midcaps but it's a larger investment.

"How often do you have to 'wind' a high cap" It really depends, on my m16 high caps i wind till it clicks and i get to shoot the whole mag so i only wind the mag that one time Ross Dawg Bait

Also you hi-cap mags are easier to load. Most of them have a trap door system that you just pour the bb's into, wind up and play. The low and mid caps usually have to be tube loaded or speed loaded with a speed loader. However these mags do not make noise. I would recommend one hicap and two mid caps. Walk with the mid cap and pop in the hicap once you have found a station or need to lay cover fire down. Just my opinion, take it for what it is worth.
