I know this sounds like a real newb question (hence the reason i'm posting it under the newbie discussion) but i'm getting a tm m16a2 for christmas and was wondering if there was any specific brand of bbs that i should look for.

Yes there is, I would suggest only high end brands, Marui, Excell, Airsoft Elite, and a few others. Personally I prefer Excell's over all other brands I've tried. But Marui's are up to par as are Airsoft Elite's. Anyways, you also should be looking for .20g+ BB's meaning DO NOT USE .12g BB's IN AN AEG. Good place to pick up some ammo. www.the6mmshop.comEnjoy your stay and welcome to MIA. Luke

What about biodegradable bbs. Are they any good?

Bio BB's are good, but consider that most brands of "bio" BB's are not indeed bio. Alright so now the plot thickens:) They do make real Bio BB's, the easiest way to tell is the number of BB's in a bag. There will be 3700+- some in .20g BB bags, but Bio's will be around half of that. So check the number per bag and again don't trust everything any retailer says. (Bar WTS and a few others but for the most part it's a good rule of thumb)

Like Luke said earlier, Go for Excels, Mauris and Airsoft Elite. I suggest Elite only because you get 3000 .25 g bbs per bag instead of 2200 .25 g bbs per bag when you buy Excel.

Some interesting data from a friend of mine (goes by the name Slug if you ever see him around, I don't think he frequents this board since he lives in Ohio, but I wanted to give him credit)...
He was benchmarking his P90 as he did upgrades to it. He tried a variety of BB's including (Tokyo Marui, Airsoft Elite, and Excel). His findings are listed below:
AEG configuration: P90, 6.04 barrel, SP100 spring
BB type, Velocity Range (fps) 0.2g Tokyo Marui, 372-380 0.23g Excel, 348-359 0.25g Airsoft Elite, 331-377 0.25g Excel, 332-342
Looking at these results I would tend to steer away from Airsoft Elite and go with Tokyo Marui or Excel...

by the way... first post, weeeee!

Dude, look at the weights. A heavier BB is going to go slower than a lighter one.

Umm, I was not looking at the absolute velocity, but rather the range of velocities.
The Airsoft Elite were far less consistent than the TM or the Excel. In real use I think that would result in some aiming difficulties as your second BB would have less of a chance of taking a similar flight path as your first BB, particularly outdoors in windy conditions.
Hope that helps explain my comments.
In my mind, consistent result == GOOD!

I would also like to add one more interesting tidbit, as I've been reading ASP allot as usual. Anyways the topic has spanned Arnie's, etc. Basically the concept is that not always will a heavier BB travel slower. There are a couple explanations, but the interesting part is that it seems some Sniper rifles could be putting some BB's down the field way the hell faster and with more force than the normal allowances. I had meant to bring it up earlier as it may require a modification of MIA rules(and potentially anyone Else's also). Oh and here is a pretty big topic on it, www.airsoftplayers.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=987I haven't read the whole thing I don't think but there was allot of discussion on this topic and some interesting info. As far as the BB weights it likely show the inconsistency of the manufacture, personally I don't care for TM though, and I don't have any proof other than looking at Excell's vs. TM's. I've found the Excell's seem to be more consistent in appearance and accuracy. Luke
