Several weeks ago, I started having a strange problem with my setup (custom M4, using primarily Echo 1 Dogs of War 100-round midcaps):
My gun would shoot about fifteen meters, and my FPS 150. Very low for my usual 90-meter, 395 FPS laserbeam. I was also getting an occasional double-feed, and I could audibly tell that it wasn't shooting smoothly (loud "crack" noise instead of the usual "thunk"). I checked compression of the parts inside the gearbox and it was flawless as usual. I checked over my hop-up/barrel system and it seemed alright (I used the paper-over-feed-nozzle test to check compression).
I found out that if I only loaded my midcaps to 60 rounds (they're rated for 100, and I usually fill them to 75 to be safe) they would work perfectly fine. However, I tried fielding it this way at Action Paintball last weekend and that didn't work out. I had the same issue no matter how many BBs I put in. While there, I tried every combination of hop-up chamber/bucking/nub/inner barrel I could. Some things worked better than others, but nothing fixed the problem.
During the week, I've been trying to troubleshoot this. My Lonex Flash Mag (which is milspec in size) works like normal, with no issues. The smaller (not milspec) midcaps will work alright if I load them to only 30 rounds, but no higher. My regular high-caps will work fine if I press up on them, pushing them into the magwell while I fire them.
I thought that, because the flash mag is milspec and thus fits tighter, I could fix the issue by putting electrical tape around my midcaps. That didn't work, even though the fit was tighter. I thought maybe the springs in the midcaps were too strong (I read somewhere that could cause these symptoms), and so I did the usual "break-in" where you fill them up and let them sit for a few hours. I even tried trimming the spring in one of them. None of that worked. I thought that maybe the springs were too weak in the midcaps, so I replaced the springs for one of them, and that did not work either. I put an O-ring around the hop-up feed nozzle and that didn't help. All this while, loading them with only 30 rounds with no mods anywhere works just fine.
So, I'm considering just replacing all of my midcaps with some other brand (I've heard good things about KWA and MAG).
I have not yet been able to test my midcaps in another AEG.
What do you guys think about all of this? I need other opinions, because I'm going crazy. I've tried so many different things.
EDIT: My friend's King Arms midcaps work fine, and my Echo 1 midcaps cause the same issue I had but in his gun. So I'm going to order some MAG midcaps and be done with this.
