Well here's what I have been thinking the last couple days. Just been needing some input from someone on if the airsoft side of it would work.
Been looking at shotguns, and also thinking that I don't like how they function(Tm that is). But maruzen makes a gas shotgun, is the gas located in the shell?(such as a MM 203 shell) Otherwise here is the basics of what I am thinking.
Take a mossberg 500 and get a airsoft 203 or shotgun shell with the gas in the shell and then make them function in the real steal. Seems possible to me, but I guess it depends heavily on size of the shell. I was thinking that real steal shotguns I can get fro less than airsoft shotguns not to mention the sheer amount of abuse it would take by contrast.
Ok if you think I'm cracked fine, otherwise tell me if you have any ideas. I do have a friend with a machine shop, so it seems possible to create a shell of the right specs, by using a normal blueprint of a 203 shell. None the less any thoughts would be appreciated.
Luke
P.S. Also planning on making some sort of way to stop it from firing normal shells, as a safety procaution.

The Maruzen shotguns do not store gas in the shells, but use a gas reservoir located in the grip or stock depending on the model. The shells only hold the BBs, anywhere from 1-10 per shell.

Yeah I couldn't tell for sure from the pics it seemed to lean toward that but without seeing one I wasn't to sure. So I guess that leaves making a smaller 203 shell, or something simular. Since a cartrige and design could actually make these closer to "simguns" whereas they would be damn cool, but also even more effective for training:)

Not that I endorse this in any way, but someone was able to use regular shotgun shells loaded with a minute amount of gunpowder, a lotta packing and 10 Excel .2 BB's in a regular shotgun that seemed to be safe enough for airsoft use (Went through one side of a plastic trash can but not out the other). It was a thread on AirsoftPlayers, I think, a long long time ago.
However, the consensus was, while it was neat they were able to do this, nobody but nobody was about to allow a real gun to be used in any games. I'm sure any field owners would have a heart attack if they knew that's what you were doing.

I think it is a great idea, you could make them one shot per shell, then it would be pretty easy, the hardest part would be the gas release inside the shell, it would have to be triggered by a real firing pin but that wouldnt take toooo much work i would think, and you would have to make the shell re-usable
all you would have to make would be the shells

Well I think it started from the ashi(Not sure if thats the name) that made real steel and happened to make airsoft also, which their parts were somewhat interchangable. None the less I would be very consious to make some sort of disabling device for not allowing real ammo. I just think it would be the best gun for the cash, especially if it could be done in a permante way so that there was no chance of using real ammo. Now I understand that this probably won't be very economical though I think it would be an interesting project gun.

Well part of what I was thinking was making the firing pin to large to hit the primer on a real shotshell. And also adding a larger spring to the firingpin. I have a few gunsmiths that love projects also that I may talk to this weekend and see how probal it would be.

It would be awesome if you could get it to work man....if you do, i might need to try it ;D
IDEA= maybe if you put a stopper type thing in the barrel that doesnt allow regular shells to enter but slighty less-wide airsoft shells in, except for the very back, which would have to stay the same width to be held in place, or something like that
