Hello everyone, my name is Dan and I (as well as a friend) am extremely interested in getting seriously into airsoft. I am twenty years old, live in Mid-Michigan(I understand that most events will be at least a two hour drive from me), and would really love to get together with other tactically minded people and test myself in combat. I have had a JG m16, and a JG m4 since i was fifteen or so, and have one on one woodland battles so i have a pretty good understanding of bb ballistics.
So here are the questions i have for airsoft vets who read this.
1. If I show up to a "Rec." event(as opposed to milsim) to try it out will there be any cohesive squads i can tag along with and actually use teamwork and legit tactics, or is it going to be a bunch of fourteen year olds running around aimlessly with airsoft guns?
2. I have been eyeballing CYMA ak's (particularly the CM036), but have noticed a lot of stigma on forums concerning people with CYMA ak's, and have even heard the word Hajji in the same paragraph mentioning "Kids with CYMA ak's". I want to assemble a sort of Latin American freedom fighter kit, but fear that i will be ostracized by any decent players for not just using an m16 and wearing marpat like everyone else. So, if i buy an ak and rock a freedom fighter look will other adult players on my team actually coordinate with me and judge me solely on my abilities, or ignore me because i am "that kid with a CYMA"?
3. Everything i have read about AEG's indicates that even if you drop big money on one, it will eventually crap out and you will have to fix it. So why not just buy a cheap full metal gun and replace internals as they break?

Others, more intimately familiar with AK's on here, will chime in to help guide you to a decent reliable one. For all I know, the one you mentioned is, but that is not the general vibe I get from their guns. As far as rocking the AK loadout, you will get no hate from this forum. Well, in general, I'm sure there is someone that will be a tool, but there is certainly no general hate for AK's here.
At a rec game, there will always be a fair share of the young'n crowd, but there are plenty your age as well. At least on the East side of the state, which is where the majority of the games you will see listed on here reside. There are plenty of individuals that are out for just racking up the head count, on their own, but you will also be able to find people willing to squad up. Get to the game early and socialize. That will be your biggest asset.
Welcome to the forum.

Dan, I am new to the airsoft stuff myself, but I have a pretty good swath of life experience, so I felt I could add something here. I have found that in competitive scenarios, there will always be kit haters...whether based in a group bias, or ignorance, or financial standing...it is going to happen. It is weird how quickly their attitude changes when they are exposed to your level of skill, no one can argue with that, assuming you've got the dedication to become excellent at what you compete in. The Delta-Bravos that want to run their mouths should be met with plastic on meat (what I call hitting your target, metal on meat in real steel)...that ought to shut them up. Run your AK bro, if that is what you want to do.

Welcome to the forums Dan! 1. If I show up to a "Rec." event(as opposed to milsim) to try it out will there be any cohesive squads i can tag along with and actually use teamwork and legit tactics, or is it going to be a bunch of fourteen year olds running around aimlessly with airsoft guns? As already stated there's usually a good majority of players that will squad up and actually work together at many of the REC games that I've been to. But I'm usually only a regular attendee at the Action Paintball/No Limits REC game that my team hosts in Taylor Michigan during the regular season. You won't be ostracized for using a CYMA AK. Lots of people use them. And if you can put together a pretty awesome Latin American Freedom Fighter kit, you may find yourself getting complimented a lot despite what you may think. Just note that many airsoft games are usually tan vs green based, so when assembling your loadout, you may want to pick up a set of tan khakis pants and OD (olive drab) pants as well so you can play on both sides. 3. Everything i have read about AEG's indicates that even if you drop big money on one, it will eventually crap out and you will have to fix it. So why not just buy a cheap full metal gun and replace internals as they break? Typically higher quality AEGS such as Tokyo Marui can last hundreds of thousands of rounds before they may experience any issues. I've probably owned over 30 AEGs since I've been playing airsoft and I've had some that were highly upgraded and I've owned completely stock AEGs. In owning all of those I've probably only had a few that I actually had experienced any internal issues with. But a lot of people do what you suggest. Some buy and upgrade their guns from the get-go, but many just run their guns until something breaks and then they upgrade the part.

The biggest thing is do what keeps it fun for you. I have nothing against AK's and neither does my group. We all run "m" series aeg's simply for the reasons of ammo. If one of us runs dry, someone throws them a mag. There will always be those that want to hate. Plus, if you want to go really crazy, polarstar will be releasing their engines for AK's VERY soon. So stay safe and have fun.

Look into other options for the AK as well, buy CYMA isn't bad quality - just a bit off on external details.
I highly encourage you working on a non-US loadout! Keep some variety in the playerbase, we don't all need to be wearing the latest operator gear. Plus it'll likely be wayyy cheaper!

My group is out of the Lansing area, as for games in mid michigan, all you'll find are the TC Paintball rec games starting the 12th. apart from that you will have to go way north, southeast or southwest.
