I saw a similar post, but this is more in-depth.
I'm looking for a serious set of Comms/Radio combo that isn't going to burn my pocket (By that, I mean like 160). I'm finding as I get more and more into this sport, having a good set (My 8 year old talkabout and 35 PTT/Radio Headset just don't cut it) can make a huge difference.
I'd like something I can fit a Boonie over (The headset) with ease and something that I can use hands off (PTT is going to be needed). Now I can spend more than 160, but i'd like to save some to put a new sound system in my car... but Airsoft comes first.
If anyone could make suggestions, or even point me in the right direction, that'd be awesome. I've been looking at IComs, but every model is a little different and i'm not sure what else there really is besides the standard talkabout.
Thank you guys, Hoggie

Would you be interested in a throat mic? They've come down in price in the last few years and you can find a.... usable, however not quiet perfect, set for about 30 bucks. I use a more expensive throat mic and a Cobra Microtalk 425.

If you're looking for decent comms forget about $30 throat mics. Here's your radio... www.ebay.com/itm/ICOM-IC-F4011-41-RC-UHF-16-CHANNEL-4-WATT-TWO-WAY-RADIO-/200777644010?pt=2_Way_Radios_FRS&hash=item2ebf47b7eaI can guarantee that you will not have range issues with one of these radios. I recommended this to the Hellfish and I heard nothing but good reports after NL3 (a Lion Claws Event). Tank and I have tested these out to I think 3 miles in Urban terrain (1 mile south of Oakland mall all the way to Rochester Road and I-75). The only issue you are going to have is that you will need to pick up the programming software and cable in order to program the radio. The dealer will program it to the GMRS frequencies when you order it, but if you want to operate on FRS (illegally, but people still do it, including myself) you will need to program it yourself. It's not hard to program, but you need the materials. I could walk you through it if you bought the software. Headset is your choice. I like having a speaker mic. One of my teammates uses something like this... www.airsoftgi.com/product_info.php?cPath=29_346&products_id=6383one sec while I dig up some more info from my older posts. Comparison between icom 4011 and gp68 (which are junk btw) « Reply #25 on Apr 12, 2012, 9:24pm » ICOM F4011 Pros: Newer board design (should in theory perform better) Known to be very durable Simple FCC Part 90 Certified (Hardware is Legal) Better Batteries (Li Ion) Available from US retailers Cons: Price ($160.00) 16 Channels Requires Programming Cable and Software (about $40) Will need computer to program Expensive Batteries I couldn't recommend the iCOM IC-F4011 more. Holy crap is their performance incredible compared to the Motorola GP68, and the Motorola Talkabout. They have more than double the range! I'm sure that the iCOM IC-F4001 has the same performance, I would be very surprised if the RF circuitry was any different. The reason we went with the 4011 over the 4001 was due to the 4011 coming stock with a fast charger and 1900mAh Li-Ion battery. The 4001 has a slow charger and the stock battery is NiMH. The cost of a new charger and battery is WAY more than the cost difference between the radios. X and I will be using these at FTF this coming Saturday, so we will see the performance in the field. We tested them today, with me standing in the parking lot behind our work and X driving down the road in his car. Under similar circumstances, the GP68s would barely do 1.25 miles. Today, the iCOMs reached 2.8 miles!

4 watt!!!? Holy crap! But yeah, they're a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. You should be careful using these radios on certain frequencies without an FCC license. I have my license and it's not hard to get a hold of. Same one I use for my Short wave radio.

What kind of other options are there currently out there besides that? I have that exact deadset you linked, I don't really like it, I really wanted a ear piece or something, but, I'm not sure. Comms is a whole new boat for me.
(I appreciate anyone who adds to this question).

I am using something similar to what Knief is using. They work great. Only issue is if you are not using the 3.5mm ear piece it will give away your position. I leave it out though so that the radio chatter will come through to my helmet cam footage. It also has the added benefit of having nothing on my ears to bother me or reduce my hearing.

Dang it, if Knief uses it, then it's good. I'll be picking up a similar set up that you guys have suggested. Thanks guys for all the great info.

I don't know I think he's getting ready to shoot some thing... probably Da Vinci... I'm not even considered human on these boards D: To keep it on-topic, I personally love the Bowman style headsets. I have a Z-tactical EVO III headset in black, I haven't gotten to fully test it, but it fits well over a baseball cap and is comfortable. Clarity isn't perfect, but it sounds cooler to me when it has that classic "radio" static distortion
