I’ve noticed a lot of “What color gear should I buy?” threads recently, so I thought I’d type up a small guide.
Obviously there are always exceptions to the rule, but this is just a guideline for typical combinations and color types.
Remember, different manufacturers call their gear by the same name, even though there are variations in the actual shading. Your best bet if you are looking for a particular color is to do a search and find as many examples of a manufacturer’s particular color. A perfect example is Condor’s Tan is a close match to Eagle’s MJK, but it is called Tan not Khaki.
Greens:
Olive Drab (OD), Ranger Green (RG) Green color based gear tends to work well with green based camos, this being said, it is not exclusive, and can be used with Tan based camos as well.
Excellent examples of a good color match ups with green colored gear would be:
Marpat/Digital Woodland, M81 (Old school Woodland) Cadpat, DPM, and Green BDUs or Flight suits.
For a while Rangers wore a different shade of green called Ranger green. Although they are now also use Khaki/Multicam gear, it is still an acceptable color to use for a Ranger impression.
Here’s some pictures with Tan and Multicam:

Tan:
Tan, Khaki, Eagle Khaki(MJK),Coyote Brown(CB), Coyote Tan(CT)
Perhaps the biggest thing to remember about using Tan gear is that manufacturers label their colors by the same terms, even though the shading maybe different. Your best bet for getting matching gear is doing a thorough search for the shades produced by each company.
Tan tends to be a bit more versatile in complimenting different colors. It works well with green based camo as well as tan and multicam. It is a sort of universal color.
Examples:
Marpat/Woodland Digital:
Desert Marpat/Desert Digital:
Woodland:
Multicam:
Specific Camo based gear:
This is where things get a little bit tricky. The largest factor to take in mind when using specific camo based gear is that most of the time it really only works well with the camo that is based off of.
Keeping that in mind there are a few times where mixing and matching can work well.
Multicam, AOR1&2 have been used in real life with different combinations so it’s feasible that if you’re trying to do a specific impression, that this could be an option.
Examples would be Rangers wearing MC gear with ACUs, SEALS using AOR 1 with whatever the hell the feel they like. (Please note this is an attempt at humor, and no disrespect is meant at all)
As a general rule specific based gear only really works well with its matched camo.
Examples:
ACU/ACU
Flectarn/Flectarn
ATACS/ATACS
Black:
While black gear has its uses, using full black setups outdoors tends to make you stick out like a sore thumb. With the exception of volcanic rock areas, there really isn’t large amounts of black found in nature.
If you’re going for a Paramilitary, SWAT, or old Schools SAS style load out, black gear may work perfectly for what you’re looking to do, but in most cases it will hinder you in an outdoor setting.
Some examples:
In the end it really boils down to what you're trying to go for in your look. If you're trying to do a terrorist style loadout, choosing a full ACU set up probably isn't your best option.
If you want to have a rig that you can use with different camos and loadouts, try to find what is the most universal, and will fit in with what ever type of setups you have.
Here is an excellent reference to the many different shades of gear offered and how they match up:

Thanks for looking.
