cometdude, we generally frown on these type of "What gun should I get?" threads. We all have vastly different opinions on what we like, so we honestly won't be of much help. We'd need to know what you're looking for a little more specifically, such as, what type of gun are you looking for (M4, AK, MP5, etc), whether a metal body is important or not, what sort of performance are you looking for, stuff like that. You can't just give us a dollar figure and have us tell you what to buy, but we'll be more than happy to look at specific guns and tell you the pros and cons.

Why? It seems that every single one of those is not only over priced, but out of the price range that the OP was looking in anyway. That's not a very helpful post, nor a solution in the slightest.
cometdude,
To expand a little further on Thor's point (he's dead on), there are so many different options out there at your price point that there's no real way to narrow it down for you based on the limited criteria you've given us. There is no best gun at any price point because the best gun is only the best gun for a specific person with a specific set of desires. What I might like to buy for $250 might be completely different from what you, Thor or anybody else on this forum might want for the same amount.
What you should do is check out some of the Hong Kong based retailers like Ehobbyasia, Redwolf, WGC and UNcompany (all linked on the left side nav bar of the home page here) and roll through their stock. That will give you a good idea of what sort of brands and models are out there and some approximate prices. Those places are all located overseas, so shipping will usually be around $50 for a medium sized AEG so make sure you take that into account. Once you've got your eye on a few models, do some Googling on them. Hell, use the search function here. This forum has been around for 10 years now, and there are very few guns that we haven't talked about in great detail. You'll be able to find a ton of information on just about anything. Once you've narrowed it down a bit, and you're just hung up on the details, ask us again. At that point, there's a lot more we can do to help steer you in the right direction.

Make sure to check out the G&G Combat Machine, it's a great starter gun. It's around $140 dollars, and is a great gun, due to it can take many after market parts. I'm not sure what you are looking for, but just though i'd hum in and mention it!

I am proud to say the combat machine was my first AEG. It's light and has a high ROF (rate of fire), and the internals are perfect for cqb. It will be shooting around 340 right out of the box, and will settle around 320-330. Make sure you clean the barrel to keep from collecting to much debris.
I recommend a 9.6v battery. Also, make sure you get a nunchuck battery.

Also, if you are looking for something different, the Echo 1 E90 is a very solid gun in my opinion.

Why echo1? They rebrand there nasty crap. Get a combat machine, call it a day. Then pick up a smart charger and a intellect 9.6 nunchuck.
