I use my gas pistols all year round with no problems. Just make sure to lube the seals properly.
First off do not use .12's. No one will feel them. I was in a game where two people were using Crosman Pulse R72 (Junk) and firing .12's. They were pissed off because no one was calling their hits because we couldn't feel or hear the .12's hitting us.
Your best bet is to focus on a solid primary. If you have a solid primary you won't really need a sidearm as much as you might think. While I do suggest you eventually get a good side arm I would wait until your primary has some reliability and accuracy upgrades. The Red Star is a decent AEG from the reviews I've read and the people I've talked to that have owned them. Depending on the model you might need to drop the spring to lower the FPS. If so put that in your budget as well.
I would suggest these steps, and use your current pistol for now:
- Buy your primary (and add funds for a spring swap if needed)
- Buy two high quality batteries and a good smart charger
- Buy some good ammo
- Play for a while to see if you like it
It's best to have two batteries. Nothing like paying to get into a game to have your battery die halfway through. Good ammo will make sure your AEG works and your barrel is safe. Then if you don't like the sport you can easily sell what little you bought. If you do like it you can work on a vest and mags for your primary. Then maybe think about your secondary. For now just worry about getting a good primary because you will enjoy the sport a lot more one.
Lastly, any AEG you buy will break eventually. Some faster than others. When your AEG does break remember it is repairable. I've seen a lot of people get into the sport and strip a $20 piston and sell their $200 AEG for like $50. Just remember if it breaks you can fix it.
