Hello. I am new to both airsoft and this forum. I would like to start playing airsoft, since I finally have money to get into something. I used to ust do odd jobs to pay for my phone and car, but I have a part time job now. I also go to college, So i have about 2 days a week off. The only airsoft gun I own right now is one from Meijer. it is a Umarex HK P30. I know that buying a cheap airsoft gun is listed as a mistake for playing airsoft. However, I bought it for shooting at stuff and i was not planning on getting into airsoft when I bought it. I hope it could be of some use, the manufacturer says it shoots 180fps, but I doubt that is with with .20g BBs. I'm thinking I could maybe use it like an emergency backup weapon?? it came with 2 mags and shoots semi/full auto, so I think it can't be that bad to start out with. as a secondary weapon. Like I said, I used it for target shooting, and wasn't planning to play airsoft. I have been looking at where the nearest airsoft events and groups are, and I am think the nearest is in Davison or Clio. I know where Clio is anyways. Does anyone know if there are any closer that I couldn't find? The search results ended up with one topic that involved owosso, and it was someone who is banned now trying to start a group. I have also been looking at better guns. I haven't decided on what I want. I know what type of gun(s) I want, but I haven't been able to find any replica that I really like. I found an Echo1 Redstar Wolverine JP-60 that I would like, but I don't know where I should buy it, like the place that'll sell it cheapest. I know that I shouldn't spen too much money in case I do not stay with airsoft, but I do want get a good first experience. So my question is, would that be a reasonable buy for a beginner? I also would like to get a better pistol if the one I have now won't work, but I can't find a good one that'll run off of CO2 or electric (I can get CO2 a lot easier than the green gas, the local sporting good store stocks the CO2 powered pellet rifles). I can find a list of good brand guns for green gas, but all the CO2 powered ones i find are either not on the list, or say they need a CO2 mag, which I can then not find. Any help here? I would prefer something that looks more ike a M9. And last but not least, sorry for any grammar mistakes and such, I guess I'm trying to get out too much too fast so I could get more help right away. EDIT: Spelling EDIT 2: Wow, no-one has read this, or they just haven't posted anything back. I re-worded everything above, in hopes to get a response

You'll want to get a new primary for sure. If you're serious about wanting to give this a shot, you can look to spend anywhere between $200-$350 on a decent enough AEG to get you going for awhile. When I was first investigating this sport (before I grew the balls to ask the same thing you're asking on this forum right now) I blew a lot of money on stuff that I really regret buying....it was absolute trash. As far as a decent starter AEG, I'm a big fan of G&G's stuff; I've got two of them currently (I'm selling one pretty soon, actually) and I've never had a problem. A bunch of the dudes on my team swear by them as well. Something like this would do well for you: www.airarmory.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=63&name=GG%20GR16%A0Carbine%20Full%20MetalOr, if you're not comfortable spending that kind of cash, the "affordable series" might be a good place to start: www.airsoftgi.com/index.php?cPath=139_24_237&osCsid=otjtjii1ut2ul6qkvsd3928vr3Remember, it may seem like you're dumping a lot of up-front cash into your first gun. Truth is, if you spend the money on something decent, it'll last you a lot longer than your run-of-the-mill cheapie clone. If you've got your heart set on a sidearm, by all means, go for it. You probably don't need one at this point. Chances are (especially as a new player) you won't use it enough to justify the cost. I pulled up a map based on your location in your profile and since you look to be dead-smack in the middle of the state. This is a problem for spur-of-the-moment decisions to attend games, but with some decent planning you can actually make it out to just about anywhere for a game. Yes, there is a field in Davison (SFOD) that I've heard great things about. Also, check out the events section for stuff going on in Lansing and Kalamazoo as well(Airsoft of Kalamazoo has some of the nicest dudes you'll ever meet playing there).

A good Co2 sidearm would be either the Co2 versions of KJW's M9's or 1911's, or (my personal favorite) the Smith and Wesson M&P 40 (non blowback). The M&P40 is solid like a tank, and the mechanical workings are so simple that harldy anything can go wrong. Also, they are about 60$ less expensive than a Co2 Blowback model. Plus, one Co2 cartridge can shoot off over 200 rounds!
Spy-ops sells the M&P for 40$ or something like that, and you can also find them at some sporting good stores (Dunhams in Canton has a rather large airsoft selection).
Then again, a sidearm is NOT completely necessary. If I were you, I would not focus on a pistol, but rather that Echo1 redstar you had your eye on. M4's are cool and cheapest at their best, but don't be pressured too much to get something you don't want. I have used my Echo1/JG m733 for three years (and counting) because it preforms well, and it has not broken down on me, ONLY because it was on sale for super cheap on Evike. Plus with some upgrade in the airseals, bushings, and spring, it preforms even better than stock.
TL;DR, Do want you want with your money, but use it wisely.

Most people don't use green gas in their gas guns anymore. It's essentially just propane with a bit of lube in it, which is why everybody just uses propane. You can pick it up at any Meijer, Walmart, Target, or sporting goods store with a decent camping section. Then, just buy a $30 propane adaptor from Airsoft Innovations or Madbull. CO2 pistols are generally pretty shitty. In almost all cases, they look and feel like toys and have serious reliability problems. And if they don't (because they're NBBs), they often shoot too hot to be of any use. Any gun shooting over 350 FPS has a 20 foot minimum engagement distance, it's within that close range that you'll want to use a pistol. If you get an AEG shooting over 350 FPS and a pistol shooting over 350 FPS, you won't be able to shoot a target within 20 feet. In that case, what's the point of having a pistol at all?
I'd say a solid 90%+ of players who carry a pistol carry something that uses green gas/propane. The guns that run on propane are just flat out better and more practical than those that run on CO2.

would my current pistol work as a sidearm for now? I know it don't have much FPS, but it is under the 350, and i could use .12g BBs instead of .20g BBs with it to help it out.
f I do stay with airsoft, I will replace it though. I seen TM has an electric scorpion that has a 90m/s rating, which would be about 295fps. I think that would be a very good sidearm, if I could find a holster for it.
I'm really leaning towards that red star, because I really like the looks of it, and i haven't seen any other airsoft AK with that type of stock other than the 74U. Other than that type of AK, I really like guns like the FAL, FNC, G3A3, Galil, Vietnam m16, or any bullpup.

While we applaud the effort, switching BB weight will not change the amount of force behind the BB. A .20g BB traveling at 350fps will have the same amount of force as a .12g BB traveling at 370fps. The sting will be the same. Thus, all FPS readings are standardized by using a .20g bb across the board.

If you like FNC's ehobbyasia is selling both the standard and shorty version of the STAR FNC for $209 right now. They normally retail for around 430 to 450 and it is one of the only guns on the airsoft market that comes stock with a MOSFET that allows three burst firing.

The manufacturer says it shoots 180fps, so if that is with .20g BBs, it would be about 200fps with .12g BBs. That would increase the effective range, wouldn't it? It does shoot full auto, so hopefully that would help with the decrease in accuracy caused by the lighter BB. I'm not sure at all if I am right, but that is what I understand from reading articles on a lot of other forums. If 20 foot is all that is needed, would 180fps with the .20g BBs work?

You aren't going to be able to shoot something 100 feet off with it, but that's not really the point of a sidearm.

It's the most accurate stock aeg I've owned. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Good luck trying to find the optics rail for it. In two months of searching, the only one I've been able to find is the $80 RS mount.

Ehobby is also selling the RS mount for about 30, I believe. I'm getting both, as soon as I get a bit of pocket money. And for 200 bucks that AEG is a steal.

Unless they just got them in the past few days, they've been out of stock. It's frustrating, because if you search the mount on Google, it comes up that they have it in stock, but if you check their site, or email them, they're still out of stock. If you find out they do have them, please let me know, I've been dying to get one.

No problem. I'm hoping to get one of these AEGs for 200 before they go back up.

Hello and welcome. I would use your current pistol until you find a replacement that suits you. Preferably propane powered. Use .20's because .12's usually are junk and have many imperfections, and it would make no sense to use them to gain a small range boost and lose all of your accuracy.
