i'm getting a m16a2 from a trade and the guy says the only problem is sometimes when he puts in a mag the hop up just dies. The guy who owned it before him says it is an easy fix you just have to go inside the hop up and reset the gears or something like that i'm just varifing that to make sure i dont get stuck with a broken pos.

Sometimes the tension screw that keeps the hop-up gears tight works itself loose. Re-tightening the screw solves the problem, but you need to be very careful - the screw is pretty tiny and if you try to tighten it too much, you'll strip the screw.

The screw he's talking about is on the wheel that you adjust the hopup with. So all you have to do is pull the charging handle and then tighten the screw.
Full dissasemble to hopup is as follows.
Push the pin out of the lower receiver near the fire selector.
Holding the pistol grip in your right hand, push up on the forward assist with your thumb, while pulling up gently with you left hand on the carry handle. The two halves will seperate. Be carefull of the tabs on the upper receiver as they are known to break. Once the halves are seperated well hinged. Then you can pull the entire inner barrel and hopup chamber oout of the upper receiver. Watch the pin on the side of the hopup as it can get caught, but just keep in mind don't force anything, as you will cause problems. Also keep in mind the receiver is quite fragile when not installed on the gun, the top doesn't have the support it does when the mech box is behind it. Anyways you can check out the hopup from there. Re assemble the opposite way. Good luck

First you hold it horizontal with the ground, so that the spring is facing up and the barrel is pointing away from you...Second, rotate the hop-up to full power. Third, take a very small phillips head screw driver and unscrew the dial on the right side. Next, Hold down the wheel that has the 'stop block' type tooth, so it doesn't move while you remove the other wheel(the wheel you are removing is the wheel that connects the dial used to adjust it and the wheel that has that stop in it)...Next, rotate the "stop block" wheel forward so that when you replace the wheel you removed, the block is now in the lowest position instead of the highest. Then, replace the wheel you removed and the adjustment dial...put it back in the gun and it work...I highly recommend that you go out to your local hobby store and get some 15 or 20 weight oil(15 if it is colder where you play, 20 if it is warmer...not much of a difference but if you notice that where you live is on the hotter side then go ahead and get the 20) and oil the barrel and the bb feed neck...I also stress that you not use ANY other oil...this will damage the gun...whether your friend has had success with it(the oil) or not..
this is what the kid who i'm trading my gun with said... does that sound right?
