a mag is a container of ammo that prodrudes outside of the gun, a clip is a container of ammo that is held inside the gun, an M1 garand is a perfect example of a clip using weapon because you insert a container holding 8 rounds into the gun , and an m16 is a mag using gun because it has a 30 round (?) container that prodrudes out of the gun.

Correct me if im wrong, but you can also use a clip to load certain kinds of magazines.

think of it this way: a clip is a device that contains ammunition.
A magazine is a device that holds and feeds ammunition.
SKS' and Garands are both fed clips.
AK47s and M16s are both magazine fed.

A magazine DOES NOT have to protrude out of a weapon. Though it may be true in most contemporary cases, there are many weapons that have internal magazines- using thus as a distinction between the age old debate of "magazine" and "clip" doesn't proove anything, conclusively at least.
The major difference between a magazine and a clip, is the fact that a magazine will hold more rounds, and has some sort of mechanical device (typically a spring) which feeds the next round into the chamber. Magazines have many different shapes, sizes, locations on a weapon, color among other things.
A clip, as it's defined, is something which holds together, thus, a clip is a smaller capacity device which holds rounds together. Most cases, the clip will automatically eject itself (as in the Garand) and is temporary. A stripper clip is used to load the internal/external magazine of a rifle by "clipping" together the rounds (usually) by their bases/primers and shoved inside. The rounds are thus shoved inside, leaving the stripper clip, which is usually tossed.

So, a hardball shotgun has a clip, and an mp5 has a mag?

To dumb it down a clip is something that holds ammunition (bullets) together and a magazine is something that holds ammunition inside of it

Just think.. CLIP is 99% of the gun is inside the gun (Mauser KAR98 K, 1903 Springfield and so on..) A Mag is fed for out side. (Ex. FG42, B.A.R., M16 series, Thompson, some bolt actions use a mag system and some 12 gauge shotties do also.. )

No, both the Mauser and the Springfield are magazine fed rifles. They use stripper clips which hold the cartridges, and load the magazine, which feeds the rounds.
Just about every bolt action rifle (with larger then a 1 round capacity) and shotgun (hence the magazine tube" uses some sort of magazine to feed the round.
Again, I'll reiterate my defitinition The major difference between a magazine and a clip, is the fact that a magazine will hold more rounds, and has some sort of mechanical device (typically a spring) which feeds the next round into the chamber. Magazines have many different shapes, sizes, locations on a weapon, color among other things.

"No, both the Mauser and the Springfield are magazine fed rifles" Um wrong, you can get ammo is strippers BUT you can also load 1 round at a time in the KAR and 1903 springfield.. you can load them both ways.. And yes its a internal magazine.. not external.. And motown i have seen Shotguns with external mags.. anyone that gets the dunhams flyers it has one in it this week a 12 gauge semi auto shotgun..
