Picked up a used Type 96 lastnight that needs a little TLC and I've got some questions about upgrades. The person I got it from said it chrono'ed just over 500 fps but I *think* the spring is only a Laylax 120SP so I'm not sure how that's possable. I'm guessing its a 120SP based on the fact the gun included the stock spring and it was in a Laylax 120SP package. Who knows though Anyway I decided to look around and see what upgrades are out there for this gun. Looked on UNC, WGC and a few others and really found nothing other then an APS trigger from Kings and a couple other odds and ends like springs. I was looking at parts for the APS-2 and they pretty much look just like the parts for the APS Type 96. Are these parts backwards compatible between the 2 models? Does anyone know a good state side dealer that can get APS Type 96 parts or has some stocked. This is my first snipers rifle and I dont even know whats out there for this thing. Thanks.

As far as I know, most (if not all) parts are not compatible between the APS and Type 96. Do you have a chronograph? You're mostly right in that there's not a very wide selection of upgrades but I feel that the upgrades that are available are the most important ones; Hop-up, springs, piston and spring guide. The PDI hop-up uses a regular AEG bucking and inner barrel (A Sig 550 barrel is a perfect length with the aftermarket flash hiders that are available) so keep that in mind if you purchase one.

Yeah I figured they do have a few good upgrades a few minutes ago. I was searching wrong on UNC and WGC so nothing was really coming up. Changed my search to just Type 96 with no APS and everything came up.
Tons of nice upgrades.
No, haven't chrono'ed it yet. I'm going to do that this evening. Left my chrono over at my gf's but I can tell you for sure there is NO way this things shooting 500 fps.
Brings up another question. Lets say I change out the 120 spring for like a 170 ish. Thats going to add a lot of stress to the cylinder assemble. Where do you start to see the most stress and part failure in a spring type rifle when upgraded?
I mean i know with AEG's if you up the spring plastic bushings break, gears strip, pistons strip extra. Not sure where bolt springer rifles start to see failure though.

I think frostee's been using the stock cylinder in his APS for years so you shyouldn't have to worry about that. If there's going to be wear it'll problaly be on the sear or piston. The cylinders are pretty strong themselves and I'd be surprised if the cylinder or cylinder head failed.

When you say stock cylinder I assume you mean even with an upgraded spring? Stock piston too? I'm just worried the nylon piston will crack if I try to run this thing at 500 fps. Atleast its already got the Laylax guide kit in it though. I really want that PDI hopup but I cant find one dealer in the USA that has it I'm going to get raped with no lube if I order that from UNC or WGC too.

Yes, frostee has an upgraded spring(s) in his APS but I don't know what piston he's using.

Chrono'ing high 200's to low 300's but not consistent. I took the bolt/cylinder apart to see what I was working with because its suppose to be fully upgrades, cough... Anyway stock piston and piston head but you are going to get a kick out of this. Either the piston head is so worn it leaks compression on the forward stroke or the cylinder tubes worn because someone wrapped electrical tape around the piston head to try to make it seal better. They are tried to use the electrical tape as the seal I have nothing else to say O boy... Maybe I'll have to harass frostee and see what all he had to upgrade. Thanks for the info Jacko. I'm for sure getting that PDI hopup and an AEG barrel.

That was a nice read. Great info, sure it will help me a lot. The stock handle of the Type 96 fits on that cylinder? Don't need an upgraded handle for that 12mm bolt? Anyway I'm starting to think the tape was on the piston head to limit the FPS. I pulled the bolt cylinder apart, removed that ghetto tape and greased everything. Batteries in the chrono died so I had to use the poor mans chrono. I took about 30 shots as a few different coke cans and I can consistently blow the bottoms out of them as 1 inch, 2 inch, 12 inch, upto 2 feet. Hell if at 2 feet I can take out the centers of coke cans, every shot then the FPS can't be too bad now. I got a couple to go threw the top center too but it wasn't consistent. I'm thinking if I get some batteries for this chrono it's going to be much higher now. This is the info I used as a basis for the poor mans chrono: www.redwolfairsoft.com/redwolf/airsoft/BulletDetail?bulletID=34

I used the stock handles on both rifles, yeah. My memory is kinda foggy on this but I think the older Type 96 had 9mm handles but all the newer ones are 12mm. If it seems to be shooting better I'd hold off on buying parts until you get more batteries.
