Well guys and gals, I'm sure most reading this won't know who I am though maybe a few will. I was active on the forums and in games around 10 years ago, sadly didn't realize it had been that long until last weekend. A buddy of mine asked if I'd help with his step son's birthday and they were playing airsoft. So I dusted off my collection of guns and gear and tried to play. Learned I'm much slower than I was, and that batteries don't like sitting that long uncharged;) So I'm going through and fixing some equipment. The trouble is that the entire scene and brands has changed almost entirely since I was involved. So I'm trying to come with grips with who is who in brands and try to weed through information on upgrades etc.
Either way right now I've got lots of guns that need work but that is all stuff I can remember how to do. The one that I don't have much experience with is spring sniper rifles. Right before I stopped playing I picked up a TM VSR10 G-Spec and it's sat stock. I used it last weekend and while it functions in stock form it's just not desirable to play with a single shot rifle shooting at 280ish FPS. Especially when my M4 is still clocking around 410ish and honestly is a better shooting rifle compared to the bolt gun. So I'm looking to upgrade, and the trouble is my airsoft budget is quite slim with a toddler running around and running my own business. So I'm looking for spring upgrades, which from what I understand means I need to upgrade the sears as well. I'm also finding I may need to upgrade the trigger assembly to handle the spring/sear combination.
I'm hoping for a little help weeding through things, some of the information I've found is older, and some of the brands of parts aren't around anymore. There are oodles of parts companies that I've never heard of and I'm not sure if they are like the old CYMA, or they are Laylax. So I'm looking for the cheapest path to get it shooting somewhere between 450-550FPS, fairly reliably. If I've got to nickle and dime a hopup arm or little $20-30 parts here and there down the road that's fine. If it's going to be say a tougher trigger pull that's also fine, I can work with that for the interim until I pick away at things to get replaced. I'm just having a hard time finding the funds to drop several hundred dollars on an upgrade path for a rifle that I haven't used in years that I might only use a few times a year(depending on how often the kids play).
So thanks so much for any advice and information you can give, I know this sounds like a newbie post, and to a degree it is since I've been out of things for so long. If you want to know something about airsoft 10 years ago I can probably fill you in;)
Take care!

I've only got experience with my aps-2 l96 but hopefully this helps. I don't know how vsr-10s are set up stock but you'll need to check out the trigger box. If the shell is plastic you'll need a metal one. Matrix makes a cheap metal drop in replacement that will work until you want something better than stock. Angel Custom parts haven't let me down yet so I would recommend their upgrade kit on evike that includes the spring, guide and piston. (Reviews said minor sanding may be required to fit the piston right) You should be able to use the stock bolt for a while, but after 6 ish games the stress was to much for my stock aluminum bolt and the handle tore out of the back. Picking up a spare bolt or Teflon coated bolt before long is recommended. Angel Custom makes a nice CNC hop up for half of what a pdi unit used to cost a couple years ago. The "neo" unit will get you the L/R spin adjustment if you can't live without it. But stock should be fine for starters. (Only buy the "ultimate" hop up by angel custom if you want to fix its feeding issues.) All said and done $80 should get you competitive. Reminder: These are bare bones recommendations. Edit: links added Going to the VSR-10 parts section on evike will show you your other options.

Thanks I'd appreciate the links I'm considering evike never used them in the past but they were one of the company's I was aware of at least. Better than waiting for WGC and the slow boat from HK years back;)

One of the best things about the VSR10 was the stock hopup. Don't change it.

I will take a look through them, looks like my little budget just got cut for a while so I may have to wait on this upgrade until I've got a little more disposable income. Though that may be better then I can do it all at once and get it done properly.
Thanks so much for the info though it's much appreciated;)

Ouch trial by fire tonight decided to open up my mechbox from my CA M15A4 since it stopped firing after a few rounds when I tried to get it running. It was running terribly anyways so no big deal knew I needed to check things over make sure it was shimmed properly and clean out the ancient grease and re grease the whole thing. Well got it apart and the trigger trolly pin had sheered on the mechbox... Dangit trial by fire to run into that problem. So I drilled a small hole in the box, took a small nail that fit tightly, filed down the head where it would just hold but sit under the selector plate. Cut it short enough to clear the gears(don't recall the name of that gear). Fit it into there with a light tap, reinstalled everything with new grease. I had forgotten how much of a pain it is to put a mechbox back together with from memory a PDI 170? Spring last I recall it chrono'd just over 400fps. Either way got it back together after fighting with the anti reversal latch and managed to get the box back in the gun in a few tried. Kept forgetting where wires need to be routed etc, it's been a long time since I've been inside that gun(or any gun).
But the end result is a perfectly functioning gun again, selector works fine riding slightly against my new stop I made. And man it's great to have my favorite gun going again, it also happens to be my normal hot shooting outdoor gun. Took it outside in the dark to set the hopup and man the range, it's so much better than my short barreled AEG's as far as consistency;) This gun has mostly TM parts from motor, to hopup etc, so I removed most of the consistency problem parts and it's shooting just perfect. Much less strain on the motor, the grease had pretty much solidified and wasn't doing much of anything at all.
So all in all happy I tore it apart, but man did it take me allot longer than it used to;)
Take care!

Another question on the sniper rifle front since my budget has pretty much been cut. I'm looking to place a smaller order for some BB's etc and I'm adding parts that I need to repair some other guns of mine.
To the point is there a level I could upgrade this stock VSR10 spring/velocity wise that wouldn't require replacing anything else but the spring. IE can it go to 400fps without much trouble, or is it pretty much what it is stock velocity without replacing just about the whole trigger mech along with the piston.
I found a few guys with goals around 450 but they were typically mandated by silly laws overseas and planned to put in a bunch of parts as well even though the velocity wasn't in the 500+ range. I'd like it to reach a little more and sadly enough on the cheap. There may be a point in the future I can dump more money into this project but right now I was thinking maybe I could drop a spring in it and pick up a bit more range without grenading the sears etc.
If not well it is what it is, but just was curious;)
Take care!

Hey brother, I don't know what ever came of it so hopefully someone that frequents the airsoft sniper boards can chime in, but I seem to recall back in the day the cool thing to do with VSR10's was low velocity setup with TK twist barrels?
Might be something to look in to

Hmm that might be interesting, in my legal reading today I was reading something to the effect that those might make a long gun illegal well make it a firearm by Michigan rules since it could be considered rifling or at least that was how I understood it as silly as that is. I'll do some reading that direction as well.
Sucks when real life takes away the airsoft budget;) That said I wouldn't give up anything I've got now just to play either, so it is what it is just would love to be able to field this gun and really I hate to admit it but now that my M15A4 is back in action and functional, it outranges this stock VSR and it's nearly as consistent so I doubt that I'll swap down to the VSR and limit myself unless I'm feeling frisky. But with a few upgrades maybe I could convince myself;)
Take care and as always thanks sir;) Also good to see ya around;)

Call me "sir" again and I might have to dig out some of my old airsoft projects just to put you on the receiving end of the barrel before I head to SK haha
Wasn't it you I was talking to before about your home made Kydex holsters?

Ha;)
Hmm I don't remember talking about kydex, from memory I thought you had some of my leather gear but I don't remember 100% if we just talked about it or if I ended up building something. I've done some kydex but it doesn't really light my fire like leather does typically. I might build a few things for myself with kydex once I get everything back up and running since I've still got a fair bit of it around the shop but I doubt I'll put out anything production wise with kydex since there are so many guys bending kydex right now;)

Ah yes, I wanted to commission a leather back harness (Devil May Cry style) from ya, but then we both ended up disappearing from the scene.

Well that's probably for the best I'm not sure back then if I'd have done as good of a job as I'd like, as always I'm learning something new everyday but I'm much much better than I was then;) And that's not to say I wasn't pretty good back then building rigs but a few thousand holsters later and I've gained allot more knowledge and experience on the topic;) Especially when it comes to building out custom stuff, though typically I don't take on much custom work these days it's just too hard to take all that time to build something one off and then charge for the time involved. Makes for some very expensive projects, which sometimes work out if someone really wants something fancy like full tooling on a custom design or something. But allot of times it's priced me out of projects, which I hate to say it but it's fine since I'd rather not build something super expensive when someone isn't looking for that, or have to charge someone a bunch for all the development that goes into that one off design. That said I've got a bunch more normal designs that I've ironed out over the years too if you haven't been on my site in a while take a look around I think you'll be surprised from the early gear you saw back then;) www.adamsholsters.com still busy and still building, actually still in the shop right now working between posts;) Take care! Very nice work brother! It's a shame I am selling/trading my M&P before I head out but I will keep you in mind for whatever I decide to pick up when I get back in a couple years.
