Alright, I was in the midst of trading a fewer small items for something I was looking to get for a while.
I traded a KMP9R and KSC G17 with 2 extra KMP9 mags for a G&G FN2000 that has had some work done to it.
The other recipient is all the way in Alaska so I had to use USPS.
I made sure to cover my bases by paying additional money for full tracking and insured it up to 300$.
The other guy having received it stated that the guns were both present but that all three KMP9 magazines were missing.
I filled a insurance claim with USPS and gave a description of the case and what was missing and what it was worth. They have now told me that those magazines were what they reffered to as "Article contained prohibited items (non-mailable)". I don't understand this. I have shipped multiple guns (mostly with UPS but sometime USPS) and I can understand a package being sent back if it had a full replica but the fact that only the magazines were missing is odd especially since the G17 mag was still present.
I know there's a chance the other guy might be scamming me but I'd like to exhaust all available options before going down the route of a argument since I still have no item on my end.
Should I just try to appeal the claim or call customer service or am I just fucking SOL?

Did he provide a picture of the package? If USPS opened it, they would have left a clear note.

136.1 covers compressed gasses and 136.2 covers military "training equipment". Maybe the mags still had gas in them and became depressed causing a leaking sound; at which point a ill-informed USPS worker defined them under one or both of those sections as un-mailable due to possible danger. Just a hypothetical scenario.

That's the only thing I could think of. And no he did not provide a clear picture of the package. He has some positive rep but not as much as I have.
Think I'm going to be screwed one way or the other. The offer I'll make him is I will reimburse through paypal for the cost of one KMP9 magazine and he ships the Fn2000 then, or he ships back everything and we go our seperate ways Even with just one magazine it's not like he's getting swindled. Not to mention reimburseing him for three magazines would just be stupid for my end since for 60$ more I could just get a brand new Fn2000 from Redwolf.

I'd get ahold of the USPS and see if there is a way you can retrieve mags

Well since it went all the way to Alaska and went through like 5-6 different transfer facilities and the tracking info did not list it occurring at any establishment so I doubt they'll even know where it is.
A buddy has suggested that when this occurred to him that he was able to resolve it after the initial insurance denial by going to the post office itself and speaking with a manager.

Did you release the gas from the magazines?

I test fired each until they didn't have enough gas to move the bolt. And even then pressed the release on them.
I did however tapped them together, then wrapped them in bubble wrap sheets so maybe it looked like something else when I was scanned.
UPDATE Ok so I received their full description of the insurance claim in the mail. Seems like they mistook the KMP9 magazines for real ones and me listing KWA ProShop website as a source for the price of them just had them throw the whole claim out.
Still going to go to the post office in person to try and get this sorted out.

I always tell them I am shipping paintball parts. I never have issues since the average joe doesn't know about Airsoft, but everyone for the most part knows or has heard of paintball and doesn't give it a second thought (I also never claim that I'm shipping things like gas mags or anything since they're always empty and not a cause for concern so why bother with the extra grief).
