Invasion Day: Plus Eight
Large numbers of North Korean 43rd Infantry Division troops overrun American 2nd Infantry Division positions outside Kumhwa. South Korean infantry begin organizing mass civilian evacuations prior to an imminent North Korean and Chinese assault toward the city center. Main and ancillary routes east and south of the city are congested with abandoned civilian vehicles and personal effects as thousands attempt to withdraw towards government operated refugee and evacuation centers.
AN-24 Antonov’s carrying 19th Special Air Landing Troops from the People’s Liberation Army paradrop northwest of Kumhwa and land unopposed and unnoticed by newly arrived Republic of Korea infantry monitoring the western approaches to the city. South Korean forces retreat under heavy small arms fire and unexpectedly large volleys of rocket propelled grenades.
Invasion Day: Plus Nine
Elements of the 43rd Infantry Division link up with 19th Special Air Landing Troops assaulting the northwest edge of Kumhwa and organize a mass advance on already weakened 2nd Infantry Division positions. American and South Korean forces sustain crippling levels of casualties and attempt an organized fighting retreat toward positions south of the city.
South Korean observers south of Kumhwa report a North Korean flag flying above the provincial headquarters in the center of the city. Heavily armed infantry wearing green uniforms with red flag patches have been seen patrolling main supply routes throughout the city. Civilians fleeing Kumhwa allege widespread abduction, torture, rape, and mass executions of unarmed civilians by Chinese and North Korea infantry.
