It looks like it's bolted on, so you could just tap threads on both sides and shave a bolt down so that it sits flush on the inside and cover the hole on the inside with cushion.

As popular those sort of helmets are, I have to ask if you feel comfortable using one. I am sure that unlike me you have goggles that would fit okay, but that may not be the case. I know that I would not be poised to wear one, not only because of my goggles, but because I would prefer a Kepi, oversuit hood, or a Kosynka (the latter usually ends up as my face cover though). For what you want to make though, I would suggest reading up on people's attempts to do so in the past. I know that one trick for old Soviet goggles was to trace the original lens on this. www.safetyglassesusa.com/fac8x.htmlMight just work as well, but I suppose you would want something thicker for the visor. Oddly enough, someone once tried to sell a personal DIY kit with a motorcycle helmet stateside: www.red-alliance.net/forum/index.php?topic=26602.0From what I recall, this is one of the main replica sellers (If you do end up wanting one): www.red-alliance.net/forum/index.php?topic=21897.0Info about his replicas: www.red-alliance.net/forum/index.php?topic=17681.0 Which other Gorka were you referring to?: ra.spetsnaz.su/wiki/Gorka

Thanks for posing the question, it got me thinking. I've looked around a lot and it seems the ESS goggles I have or similar goggles to them are commonly used along with these helmets. There's pictures of the straps going under or over the helmet, so that doesn't seem to be an issue. If I were to put the visor down, I'd likely wear the goggles inside the helmet. I'll probably wear a bandana or kosynka on hot days, as well. Helmet might get too hot. As for the lens, what are the dimensions of that face shield? I can't seem to find them on the site. Do you think it would be big enough? That "kit" I remember seeing on eBay a while back, interested me but was out of budget. And the replicas even more so. As for the Gorka, I kind find the correct name of the cut. Here's a link to the listing I'm using as reference.

I want to say SPLAV as the manufacturer of that set, but the -3 refers to a modern Gorka model, and others make it as well. I cannot comment on it.

Oh well, I'll have to keep looking around for the perfect model. Quick update, I flipped the AKS-74U, now I'm looking for DBoys steel AKS-74 or AK-74M, something that'll be much more accurate for my inaccurate kit. I also bought the base for my TIG/Altyn helmet lookalike, an old skidoo helmet. Already has the correct chin cup and almost correct ear flares. Here's a link to the auction, I'll get some pictures once it comes in. There were a few other candidates for a helmet that had a better cut but they were more expensive, needed more work, or just got bought before I had a chance. However I feel this one, with some slight cutting on the ear flares, should work just fine.

Dang, since when were DBOYS AKs so cheap? Last time I was searching around for one they were still close to $200, but then again that was a couple years ago.

Part of me is immediately skeptic that airsplat is selling the steel models that cheaply, unless they had a surplus of them. I know I was lucky to even find the steel akms version stateside back when the drought was in full swing, but I suspect it was an interim production model.

I think all the DBoys AK74m's are steel. At least mine was and it wasn't even advertised as such. A new model of the DBoys AK74m came out since then, with a ribbed top cover instead of a flat one. I don't know if they changed the material used, but I still see the old models for sale everywhere if you are worried. The stock RPS is realistic, be it a good or bad thing . I put a microswitch trigger in mine and whatever other parts I could find to turn it into a speedy tank. Also, if you want goggles for an accurate impression, I've seen several pictures of soldiers using Splav's copy of the ESS goggles.

I thought it was a bit questionable, but after shipping it comes out to about $140, which seems the standard for Dboys AK's. AirsoftGI is selling Dboys AK-74M's for about $140 with free shipping, and had the AKS model for $120.

I used to hate AKs until I used the AK-74M in BF3 and used a rental AK at a rec game last summer. Now I think AK-74Ms look AWESOME.
Sorry, carry on.

Some updates. First is the new gun! Flipped the Echo 1 CPM (didn't like it much, build quality was eh), and traded my MK18, now I've got $280 and this! It's a CYMA, however the build quality on this one is astounding! No stock wobble, quite a few parts are steel, and even the imitation wood is nice. I haven't peeked inside or shot it yet, however it looks like it's barely been used. Correct magazines are coming in the near future (Thanks Hyena!), for now I have two RPK highcaps that look more out of place than a BMP-2 in a Ford dealership. Next is the helmet. Came in from eBay 4 days after I won the auction. Has a close shape, chin cup, and correct straps. So I got to work on it, took off the stickers and got as much of the 42 year old residue off as I could, removed the front snaps, styrofoam liner (this was designed to keep your noggin safe in a crash, so of course it's super thick and looks weird), and cut the ear covers to a much closer shape. Compared to the real deal: Next comes filling in the holes, sanding, affixing all the bits and pieces of hardware, and painting. I also need to get some pads for the inside, but that's not as huge of a priority. I'll be heading to the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot next weekend, so who knows what stuff I'll find there and bring back. Stay tuned!
