So I bought a set of BDUs for my son and it came with the words US Marines stitched on the pocket. I have read that wearing this to games can be very offensive to those who are or have served our country as he is not a marine, so we removed this stitching out of respect. My question is this: do we also need to remove the anchor and globe insignia, or is this more like carrying an Airsoft replica with real trades?

I would say its like trades. Unless it had rank and unit patches I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have M81 that has the Army tag on it and another pair with Airforce.

Any active or retired marines able to chime in on this?

Sure. The way I see it, people wearing any sort of Marine item is good. If people are willing to spend a good amount of money on something just because it has our insignia on it, I am flattered. There are 3 things on the utilities that are removable: The name Tape, the branch tape, and rank. I personally don't have much of a problem with name tapes, and I haven't heard of Marine's not liking it, so I would say that's OK. The tape that says Marines on it, I would probably think a unkind thought about you for a second, make a joke to my buddy about you "thinking you made it", then forget about it. Rank, I would demand you remove, or take it off myself. Wearing any sort of rank is a big no-no, especially for Marines, because picking up rank is hard for us. Don't worry about the embroidered EGA. That is distinctly part of the uniform, and if you try to remove that, you might as well remove the EGS's hidden in the digital print. (HINT: That's not really possible without cutting holes in it.)
As I previously stated, I actually love when people do any sort of Marine impression, or wear our uniform. (EDIT: As long as its not our service or blues uniform, or the cammies anywhere outside of the paintball/ airsoft field). Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right? And when you drop big bucks to imitate us, hell, you can't help but smile. The only thing that irks me is to see people wear the cammies incorrectly (non bloused, with unit patches, ect) but I have learned to just let the butthurt pass. So by all means, go right ahead. As long as you don't wear rank or claim to be a Marine, no body should have any trouble with it. Just try to treat it with the respect it is due.

There is no way in hell either I or my son would try to wear rank we haven't earned, that's a given. I'm glad to hear how you feel about the EGA. However, I bought the BDUs used for $35; not exactly shelling out the dough for authenticity... We are, however, making at least an attempt at a marine load out, so feel free to smile. No butthurt necessary! Thanks for the feedback, and thank you for your service.

To me (frmr army) it's both different and the same. I don't mind name tapes, nothing wrong with having your own name on your stuff. But branch identifiers, unit patches, rank and skill tabs are pretty much a bad idea. Nothing is given in the service, it's earned. It's worth pointing out that I too think that a Marine logo in that instance is ok. But at events such as Team R.A.G.E hold you will be removed instantly for the things I mentioned above. Just be tactful with it, show respect to it and it should all be gravy.

So do is the EGA emblem considered a "branch identifier" or just the "US Marines" stitching on the breast?

I doubt anyone would give you trouble for the embroidered emblem.

To speak on somewhat official capacity on behalf of Team RAGE with this, as it was mainly my idea to start implementing it, wearing the stitched in EGA that comes directly into the cammies isn't as big of a deal as you keeping that U.S. MARINES part on. I'm glad you decided to remove that, if you look closely at your cammies, you'll see little EGA's all over the pattern no bigger than a fingernail, obviously I wouldn't expect you to remove those either, and honestly it would look more jacked up if you tried plucking at that EGA and then had something mangled there.
The official "do not wear unless you've earned it properly" list is limited to: Medals, ribbons, rank, unit specific patches, warfare devices, or specialty tabs. It's the exact same that you'll see at Lion Claws (Just walk by Mad Max wearing a Master Sergeant collar device and a Ranger tab, I'll bring popcorn). But it's pretty much limited to that. Congrats on choosing a USMC loadout, if you need any help building a modern day one, I just left Active Duty August of last year, so I'd like to think I'm still somewhat relevant to it.

I would love any advice you could give me, Mosin. I'll be seeing you at your event in March, if I don't see you sooner.

I would pay to see someone walk by Mad Max wearing that! And if you are providing popcorn I will bring folding chairs.

I have a quick question related to this. I have a friend starting Airsoft, all he really has is camo and it was his dads when he was in the Airforce during desert storm. It still has all the unit patches, branch name, and rank on it, which he understands how it can offend past and current service members, but his dad doesn't want him to remove any of the patches. He doesn't want to offend anyone but he also wants to respect his fathers wishes. Any advice you be good to resolve this issue, as it is kind of a moral grey area.
